Dietmar,
Re: William R. Godkin « Reply #5 on Apr 21, 2013, 5:08am
Your recent post (photo), has caught my attention ! One of my relatives did some good research a few years ago on Charging Eagle. The woman in the photo may very possibly be one of Charging Eagle's daughter's. ?
Julia Good Voice Bear (aka), Blue Whirlwind (aka), Blue Water (aka), Lily Fireheart (aka), Lily Fireheart Bear b. 1861-63 d. 5-26-1939. Julia Good Voice Bear married twice.
A good clue is; In your posted photo, it list's her husband as Terry. IF, this is Samuel Terry b. 1834 d. 1924, there is a good possibility that this is Julia Good Voice Bear/Blue Whirlwind. They married at the Spotted Tail Agency on 6-24-1878.
I will also add that, Blue Whirlwind's facial features resemble the photos of my G. G. Grandmother, who would be her sister.
Please respond. Thank you, kakarns

Of course, there are still many unanswered questions. Once again, I'm reaching out for help. [In reference to my post on 3-22-13] 2.) I am trying to figure out, who the biological parents were of; "Elbert Chief" ? After reviewing the following Census from; 1893 thru 1896 and 1898, 1900 (concerning Thunder Bird, Rising Sun and Chief) In 1893; Thunder Bird, Rising Sun and Chief were listed together with Shoots For Them and White. Chief was listed as a Gr. Son, 5 mo. old. In 1894; Rising Sun and Chief are listed with Shoots For Them and White. In 1895; Rising Sun and Chief are listed. In 1896; William Peno, Rising Sun, Chief and Agarota Peno are listed. In 1898; White, Iron Track and Chief are listed. (Chief is listed as G. Son) In 1900; Iron Track and Elbert Chief are listed. Some recent discovery's about Dave Chief (aka), Dave Yakima Chief.:
1.) Dave was a Native American actor and was in atleast two movies.
2.) Dave signed a letter dated July 14, 1991 which, consisted as part of, the elder and warrior member's of the "Bear Butte Council". [NOTE]: This letter may also include signatures of, some of my other relative's. (Still researching)
Would anyone have any info on; Merle Whistler or, Pete Fills The Pipe Sr. ?
Good progress today.

I'm still researching the following and have hit a "brick wall".:
Old Chicken b. 1873 (per Mike Stevens website, is listed as a daughter of Iron Track).
These are some questions that I've been askin' myself:
1.) So was Iron Track, (aka), Little Old Woman because, per Mike Stevens, Whistler and Little Old Woman had a daughter, Old Chicken born: 1873
2.) Was Iron Track married to Whistler at one time ?
3.) Did Iron Track possibly, adopt Old Chicken as her daughter.
4.) Which, Whistler are we talking about ? Was this the Brule Whistler ?
There must have been atleast two other men named Whistler (in this time frame) besides the one listed as, the Father of Rising Sun. One killed by Wild Bill Hickok on the buffalo hunt, one killed in the Pawnee battle. (both of these Whistler's supposedly died in 1872.)
5.) Were Rising Sun and Old Chicken sister's ?

Re: Kicking Bear and Short Bull « Reply #18 on Apr 3, 2011, 3:03pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A website visitor has send me this information on Kicking Bear and his cousin Elbert Chief: Kicking Bear is one of 3 brothers by his father Black Fox and mother Iron Cedar Woman. Kicking Bear, Flying Hawk and Black Fox II. Kicking Bear had one daughter and 3 sons. The one son that lived on into the 1900's is Thunderbird or Frank Kicking Bear. My friend Dave Yakima Chief, Oglala Lakota, now deceased, told me in 1998 that his father, Elbert Chief was first cousins with Frank Kicking Bear. Elbert's father was Thunderbird and his mother was Goes Out With It or Rising Sun. They all (Kicking Bear, Chief and Black Elk too) lived in Manderson, The Wounded Knee District. The Thunderbird name is familial lineage I see. Dave Chief's Lakota Oglala name was Wakinyan also or Thunder. maybe Thunderbird. Dave Chief's mother was Hattie Fills the Pipe whose father was Silas Fills the Pipe and his father was Red Dog. Dietmar, I am wondering if, you still have contact with this person named; Tanya ? Or, could you get in touch with her again ? There is a very strong possibility that I am related to this "Chief" family. I am trying to figure out the connection (relationship) to my G.G.G. Grandfather Charging Eagle. Several members from this family are listed on the Charging Eagle Allotment. amertribes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=genealogy&action=display&thread=1411I have been researching this for months with the help of LaDeane Miller. I have put together a "rough draft" of, a chart which starts with "Bad Teeth", "Crow Feather", "Shoots For Them", "Kicking Bear" etc., (and for now), ends with "Dave Yakima Chief" b. June 25, 1930 d. June 10, 2005. I need more help with information on some of these people. One example is; Shoots For Them b. 1820-22. I cannot find much information on this man. I may stand corrected but, it looks like (according to Census records), Shoots For Them married two sister's named; "White" b. 1825-27 and "Iron Track" b. 1831-33. Any help would be appreciated ! Cousin, Unfortunately, I still do not know what part of the Lakota family Charging Eagle and his parents originated from. We may never know. However, I keep searching for the same answer that, you seek. More common than not, by tradition, a man would live with his wives family. For reason's unknown to me, Top Of The Head (aka) Pecokanwin received her Allotment with the CRST while, Charging Eagle received his with Pine Ridge. Since, Pecokanwin was enrolled with the CRST, most of her family (our family) enrolled there also.

J Oetker - Glad to hear from you cousin. My lineage/research project started many years ago. I have become addicted. Partially because, for every answer I find, it raises several more questions. It also, didn't take me long to figure out that, this work is much harder than, I expected. I now realize, my work has become part of my life and my work, may never actually be done. I have too much pride, to give up.
I have been very fortunate through this research, to have met several family members and friends whom, some are on this wonderful site.
Hopefully, I will be posting more information soon.

(5-128), 1892, CENSUS of the Sioux., Indians of Medicine Root District, S. D., Agency, Pine Ridge Agency, S.D.
NO., INDIAN NAME, ENGLISH NAME, SEX, RELATION, AGE
[Note]: They must of had another list to refer to for their Indian names because, under the column for Indian names, they only give reference to a number. ? (With the exception of, the "Chips" families. They are all listed as being from the Rosebud Agency.) Special attention is drawn to this CENSUS due to; All of the these families had a ink stamp between the Indian Name column and the English Name column which, states; "BAD CONDITION" Again, I will do my best reading of this hand written document and a "?" is placed next to, things hard to read.

Kingsley,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.
Per your question; Reply Nov. 27, 2012 "On Oglala bands, have you any specific questions?"
I'm just looking for my relatives. My main research right now is based on people's names contained within a couple of documents. They are: 1.) The people listed on Charging Eagle's Allotment. 2.) The people listed on Her Black Lodge's documents.
If, I knew the parent's of, Her Black Lodge it would hopefully, help me figure out who, Transparent Stone's parents were. Since, they were 1/2 sisters.
I am trying to go back another generation and discover who my G.G.G.G. Grandparents were and if, they were Oglala.
It is pretty obvious that Charging Eagle may have spent a great part of his life with the Oglala's. I do not know which band Transparent Stone and Charging Eagle originated from and if, her and Charging Eagle lived with the Oglala while married, etc. It is documented that they separated before his marriage to All Holy.
