Most recent research involves a family with the last name, Horse. I have been trying to figure out the link between Charging Eagle and the Horse family. I know they are relatives, just don't know how they were related. One of the Horse family members was, Jerry Robert Horse. Sorry, (Due to an error earlier today, I have made a correction to this post.) Thanks, kakarns

My most recent work has involved re-reviewing some Medicine Root District Census CA 1890. The pg. has #'s 601-625 listed. In this list of names, Charging Eagle family is listed as;
NO. INDIAN NAME ENGLISH NAME SEX RELATION AGE 619 Charging Eagle M Hus 55 620 No Name F Wife 56 621 Owl Head M gr son 8
Notes: a.) Through quite abit of research, I think that Owl Head was, (aka), William One Feather. b.) What's now in question. Have I overlooked the fact that, Charging Eagle may have had 2 wives during 1890 and 1891 ? Or, was No Name and All of it, one in the same person. I now realize that a family actually existed named, No Name. In the list of names from this same Census pg., the name, No Name is mentioned several times with different families.
Per: Medicine Root District Census CA 1891;
NO. INDIAN NAME ENGLISH NAME SEX RELATION AGE 448 Wanbli wakuwa Charging Eagle M hus 56 449 Ataya All of it F wife 57 450 Tahu ? Rosa Neck F niece 10 451 Hinhan pa Owl Head M son 9
Any thoughts ?
Thanks, kakarns

Would anyone have any information on; Spotted Elk or, his wife Yellow Cedar. According to a "Will" found via "Google Book" search, Yellow Cedar lists: Moses One Feather and Close (wife of, Frank Feather and, daughter of Charging Eagle) as; brother and sister. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you! kakarns

While researching, I ran across this earlier post by jinlian.
Re: Chief Smoke and his family Post by jinlian on Oct 23, 2008, 6:33am
Hi Roberta and welcome.
There are two versions about Woman's Dress parentage (about the name: I remember I've read in J. Ostler's book that the name was given to him after a raid against the Shoshone in which he reported a woman's dress): Eli Ricker, saying that he was a grandson to Chief Smoke (son of Spotted Bear aka Bad Face), and Donovin Sprague who has him as a son of Smoke himself and a woman named Burnt Her. Both sources reports he was born around 1846 and grew up in Chief Smoke's camp, and then in what afterwards became the Bad Faces band. In 1877, he enlisted as army scout and was involved in the unfortunate events that culminated in Crazy Horse's death. In 1879 he joined the Pine Ridge's Indian police, re-enlisting about 20 times (for a period of 6 months each) and was wounded during the 1879 Cheyenne outbreak. Incidentally, since his family was part-Cheyenne, appearently Pine Ridge agent asked for the release of the Cheyenne prisoners related to Woman's Dress. He and his family (according to Sprague, he married 4 times - his last wife was named Gray Cow) lived in Wounded Knee District. His last service to the army was the 1906 scouting mission to the fleeing Utes camp. Woman's Dress was also one of the informants for J. Walker's notes on Oglala culture and society. He died in 1920. His son was called Edward Woman Dress.
My comments:
In refer. to: the Sprague statement, "he married 4 times" and cross refer. with the info. from the "Tiyospaye" site and my documents.
Is it safe to suggest by combining the two Woman's Dress listings on Tiyospaye; Woman's Dress b. 1845 and Woman's Dress b. 1846, are one in the same person ?
From that site and what documents I have, we may have figured out who three of the four wives were, in the earlier post by jinlian ? Gray Cow, White Cow and Red Woman.
jinlian's earlier post also, helps me confirm that Woman Dress did have a son named Edward Woman Dress. The Edward Woman Dress who married, Alice White Cow Chief (aka), Alice Woman Dress and had son, Edward Woman Dress Jr..
Maybe this helps with the confirmation of, Kingsley's identification of the individuals in, the photo posted above.
Please, let me know what you think ! Thanks.

ladonna, Thank you for correcting me. I learn more every day !
Over the past several years, while doing my research, I have read allot of articles from this site but, have just recently decided to join. I have watched as people solve family connections and the mystery of whether they are related or, not.
I would like to ask the Administrator's to review my post and remove them from this thread if, they feel necessary. This may save some further confusion in the Blackfeet thread. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
As I continue, I agree with your last post but, I do realize also that, many things are possible. For example;
My G.G.G. Grandfather (from the Oglala / Kiyuksa Band), Charging Eagle settled on allotment land at Medicine Root Creek, near Kyle, SD. However, his daughter Top Of The Head, (my G.G. Grandmother) married Daniel A. Powell, settled on the Bad River and enrolled with the CRST. Many of the Charging Eagle family, including my Father, (born in Eagle Butte, SD) and myself were and are enrolled with the CRST.
Thanks again. kakarns

I went back and reviewed some items which, I commented on before concerning; Juila Good Voice Bear and Julian Fireheart
Julia Good Voice Bear (aka) Lily Fireheart Bear, d. May 26, 1939 at the age of 76 yrs. [therefore, born c. 1863] Julian Fireheart, d. August 28, 1941 at the age of 79 yrs. [therefore, born c. 1862]
After re-reading the copies of documents at hand, it seems both are listed as Rosebud Allottee's and some hand written notes on the documents suggest, Julian had ties at Pine Ridge also.
It appears that I have been misinformed on some of the information I previously posted and this may be a different Fireheart family that, Julia Good Voice Bear married into. At this point, I would have to agree with ladonna.
Thank you, kakarns

LaDeane, The information I have on Charging Eagle's parents comes from two different forms titled; Form 5 - 153 I believe these may be some type of research form used by the Agency when doing research for Will's and Probates. a.) Charging Eagle's marriage to Broken Rock b.) Charging Eagle's marriage to Paints Herself Brown Both forms list his parents as Father / Grows Quick and Mother / Starts Fire
In refer. to: Julia Good Voice Bear Document; Dept. of Interior, Approval of Heirship, Office of Indian Affairs May 19, 1914 Charging Eagle died December 19, 1910 at age 76 years and left surviving as his only heirs at law, his wife, Broken Rock and three daughters, namely, Julia Good Voice Bear, Top Of The Head and Close etc.... Also, Document; Title Status Report dated; June 15, 1962, lists Julia Good Voice Bear as, Charging Eagle's daughter.
In refer. to: Prairie Chicken The only thing I know about the person named this is from; Prairie Progress in West Central South Dakota 1968, a book published by Historical Society of Old Stanely County. On pg. 495, there is a article about my G.G. Grandfather, Daniel A. Powell Sr.. This article includes a picture of Dan Powell Sr. and next to him, is a picture of Prairie Chicken.
Daniel A. Powell Sr. was married to Top Of The Head (aka) Pecokanwin, daughter of Charging Eagle and Transparent Stone and also, a sister to Julia Good Voice Bear.

While doing some research on 12-28-11 on the "Standing Rock Agency Ration Issue to Head of Families by Bands 1885" by tpkunesh, I found the following listings of interest:
1.) Under; Chief Sitting Crow / Blackfeet, 14 - 17 July 1885 #65, No. in Family (7), Wanbli Wakuwa / Charging Eagle
2.) Under, Chief Big Head / Upper Yancktonnai, 28 July - 10 August 1885 #28, No. in Family (2), Wanbdi Watakpe / Charging Eagle
3.) Under, Chief High Bear / Upper Yancktonnai, 28 July - 10 August 1885 #112, No. in Family (10), Wikona / Woman Grows Rapidly
[Note]: Charging Eagle's parents were, Father / Grows Quick and Mother / Starts Fire. I am in hopes that I may have found Charging Eagle's Mother (perhaps, a widow by this time).
By finding this recent information, it could help explain one of the reasons why, I have not been able to find much documentation of Charging Eagle's where abouts, prior to 1886. This may prove his affiliation with some of the Northern Sioux, since he settled in Medicine Root Creek District of Pine Ridge. Possibly, he went north in the summer and returned south in the winter. Also, this may help explain why one of Charging Eagle's daughter's, Julia Good Voice Bear, ended up being married to Julian Fire Heart. There is also ties to the One Feather's.
A special Thank You goes out to Mr. Miller and Mr. Bray for trying to help me with this Charging Eagle Project ! I am hoping that more people will try and help. I do appreciate the wonderful information contained on this site.
Thanks, kakarns
