I am new to this site. I would like to ask for help with my Lineage Research Project. I am the G.G.G. Grandson of "Charging Eagle" (b. 1834, d. 1910) Throughout my research and the help of some other family members, we have discovered that there were possibly as many as 4 Sioux, Charging Eagle's. My G.G.G. Grandfather was the Charging Eagle, who camped with the Kiyuska, in the Medicine Root District (near Pine Ridge, SD) and just north of Kyle, SD with: "Chief Little Wound." I have worked for several years now on my Native American Heritage and continue to try and find out more. It seems as though per family stories, Charging Eagle came to Pine Ridge from Colorado in circa 1868. He would later settle near Pine Ridge for the remainder of his life. My goal is to learn more of his journeys in life, prior to when, he came from Colorado. I have found out that his parents names were: Father; "Grows Quick" Mother; "Starts Fire" However, I do not know what part of the Sioux family they originated from ? Charging Eagle married at least 4 times and these were his wives that I know about: All Holy, Paints Yellow, Broken Rock, Transparent Stone and possibly, Close Together. Charging Eagle's had at least 3 daughters, who were: Julia Good Voice Bear, Top Of The Head (my G.G. Grandmother), Close Glad to be a member and Thank You ! Any help would be very much appreciated ! toksha

The first mention I can see of your Charging Eagle is the Red Cloud Agency Ledger for 1876-77. He is listed as you say in the Kiyaksa band of the Oglalas, and in fact is included in the "beef band" of Little Wound, the principal chief of the Kiyaksas: that is he was rationed for beef (one steer per 30 people) with Little Wound. It suggests some relationship to Little Wound.
On Mike Stevens' website it mentions a relationship to Crow on Head. Do you know about this? The reference is a little confusing. It also says that another name for Crow on Head was Brown Bull (or Yellow Bull, Tatanka Gi). That would indicate another relationship to the Little Wound-Bull Bear family. The Yellow Bulls were related through one of Bull Bear's brothers.
The 1874 incremental census at Red Cloud Ageny by Agent Saville, March-August, has good complete lists for each of the Kiyaksa sub-bands - Little Wound, Bad Wound, Three Bears, Stabber, et al. But I don't find Charging Eagle. Perhaps he was still in Colorado. What that could refer to is that part of the Kiyaksa band resisted settling at the agency in the 1871-75 period, staying in their hunting grounds below the South Platte for much of the year. This part of the band was led by Whistler until his death at the hands of buffalo hunters in 1872, subsequently by Two Lance (Whistler's brother), No Flesh, Three Bears and other headmen. The last of these finally were compelled to the agency in spring 1875 because the buffalo were completely hunted out on the central plains.
I don't know about the parents of Charging Eagle, I'm afraid. But I shall continue looking.
One of Charging Eagle's wives was a half-sister to two or more of the wives of the Brule (Sichangu) head chief Spotted Tail. I wonder if Charging Eagle was living with the Southern Brules before c. 1876? I shall follow that lead up and come back
Hope this helps

Kingsley, Thanks for your reply and hard work !
re: paragraph (1.) I do have a copy of the Meat Records that you speak of.
re: paragraph (2.) Per copy of "Report of Heirship" for "Breaks Rock": Breaks Rock married 3 times; a.) Unknown b.) Crow On Head (aka), Yellow Bull #1 c.) Charging Eagle
Breaks Rock had 3 Children; White Cow Chief [other Parent, Unknown] Yellow Bull #2 (aka), Brown Bull [other Parent, Yellow Bull #1] Louis Returning Warrior [other Parent, Yellow Bull #1]
It appears that Charging Eagle and Breaks Rock did not have any children together.
re: paragraph (3.) Interesting. I too, will do some research on this. Thanks.
re: paragraph (5.) Yrs. ago my Grandmother showed me a letter from a cousin of hers which, stated that Transparent Stone's 1/2 sister, (aka) Chief Spotted Tail's Widow #2, had inherited 1/6 of Spotted Tails Estate. Through copies of "William Spotted Tail's Testimony", Widow #2 is "Black Lodge". Therefore, Charging Eagle's wife, Transparent Stone (my G.G.G. Grandmother), was a 1/2 sister to Black Lodge.

While doing some research on 12-28-11 on the "Standing Rock Agency Ration Issue to Head of Families by Bands 1885" by tpkunesh, I found the following listings of interest:
1.) Under; Chief Sitting Crow / Blackfeet, 14 - 17 July 1885 #65, No. in Family (7), Wanbli Wakuwa / Charging Eagle
2.) Under, Chief Big Head / Upper Yancktonnai, 28 July - 10 August 1885 #28, No. in Family (2), Wanbdi Watakpe / Charging Eagle
3.) Under, Chief High Bear / Upper Yancktonnai, 28 July - 10 August 1885 #112, No. in Family (10), Wikona / Woman Grows Rapidly
[Note]: Charging Eagle's parents were, Father / Grows Quick and Mother / Starts Fire. I am in hopes that I may have found Charging Eagle's Mother (perhaps, a widow by this time).
By finding this recent information, it could help explain one of the reasons why, I have not been able to find much documentation of Charging Eagle's where abouts, prior to 1886. This may prove his affiliation with some of the Northern Sioux, since he settled in Medicine Root Creek District of Pine Ridge. Possibly, he went north in the summer and returned south in the winter. Also, this may help explain why one of Charging Eagle's daughter's, Julia Good Voice Bear, ended up being married to Julian Fire Heart. There is also ties to the One Feather's.
A special Thank You goes out to Mr. Miller and Mr. Bray for trying to help me with this Charging Eagle Project ! I am hoping that more people will try and help. I do appreciate the wonderful information contained on this site.
Thanks, kakarns

LaDeane, The information I have on Charging Eagle's parents comes from two different forms titled; Form 5 - 153 I believe these may be some type of research form used by the Agency when doing research for Will's and Probates. a.) Charging Eagle's marriage to Broken Rock b.) Charging Eagle's marriage to Paints Herself Brown Both forms list his parents as Father / Grows Quick and Mother / Starts Fire
In refer. to: Julia Good Voice Bear Document; Dept. of Interior, Approval of Heirship, Office of Indian Affairs May 19, 1914 Charging Eagle died December 19, 1910 at age 76 years and left surviving as his only heirs at law, his wife, Broken Rock and three daughters, namely, Julia Good Voice Bear, Top Of The Head and Close etc.... Also, Document; Title Status Report dated; June 15, 1962, lists Julia Good Voice Bear as, Charging Eagle's daughter.
In refer. to: Prairie Chicken The only thing I know about the person named this is from; Prairie Progress in West Central South Dakota 1968, a book published by Historical Society of Old Stanely County. On pg. 495, there is a article about my G.G. Grandfather, Daniel A. Powell Sr.. This article includes a picture of Dan Powell Sr. and next to him, is a picture of Prairie Chicken.
Daniel A. Powell Sr. was married to Top Of The Head (aka) Pecokanwin, daughter of Charging Eagle and Transparent Stone and also, a sister to Julia Good Voice Bear.

My most recent work has involved re-reviewing some Medicine Root District Census CA 1890. The pg. has #'s 601-625 listed. In this list of names, Charging Eagle family is listed as;
NO. INDIAN NAME ENGLISH NAME SEX RELATION AGE 619 Charging Eagle M Hus 55 620 No Name F Wife 56 621 Owl Head M gr son 8
Notes: a.) Through quite abit of research, I think that Owl Head was, (aka), William One Feather. b.) What's now in question. Have I overlooked the fact that, Charging Eagle may have had 2 wives during 1890 and 1891 ? Or, was No Name and All of it, one in the same person. I now realize that a family actually existed named, No Name. In the list of names from this same Census pg., the name, No Name is mentioned several times with different families.
Per: Medicine Root District Census CA 1891;
NO. INDIAN NAME ENGLISH NAME SEX RELATION AGE 448 Wanbli wakuwa Charging Eagle M hus 56 449 Ataya All of it F wife 57 450 Tahu ? Rosa Neck F niece 10 451 Hinhan pa Owl Head M son 9
Any thoughts ?
Thanks, kakarns

Most recent research involves a family with the last name, Horse. I have been trying to figure out the link between Charging Eagle and the Horse family. I know they are relatives, just don't know how they were related. One of the Horse family members was, Jerry Robert Horse. Sorry, (Due to an error earlier today, I have made a correction to this post.) Thanks, kakarns

Listed under the children of Good Voice Crow and Mollie Dwarf, there is a [Unknown] Good Voice Crow b. 1889, the same year as Rosa.

Thankyou, Kim for posting this interesting document. I guess you don't have any more of the Meat Records, right?
I wish I had more to add about Charging Eagle. I keep his family in mind, and will add anything I find or think about

The information on the Yellow/ Brown Bull connection to the Bull Bear family is from Lawrence Bull Bear's interview with Scudder Mekeel in 1931 - in Mekeel's 'Field Notes' kept in the Anthropological Archives of the American Museum of Natural History.
Lawrence told Mekeel that Bull Bear was one of "only four sons" born to White Swan: Iron Hatchet, Crazy Dog, Bull Bear, and Self-Met. Mekeel gives the last named's Lakota name as Iye itcila. He then remarks that "Thompson Brown Bull was the eldest son of Self-Met. These four sons of White Swan all had wives and many children. It was a big family after this - a big group which stuck together. Self-Met had [another] son named Spotted Eagle."
The Lakota words for yellow and brown are very similar and are often confused in translation.
If we look at the 1890 Pine Ridge Res. Census for the Kunhinyan Band, Medicine Root District, we find a Yellow Bull, age 61 (born c. 1828-29), living in the next cabin/household to his cousin (in Lakota terminology an elder 'brother') Bull Bear the Younger, age 68, born c. 1822. There is also a younger Yellow Bull, age 31 (born c. 1858-59), in the same Band. Spotted Eagle, perhaps the elder Yellow Bull's brother (though nb. older), is listed as age 66 (born c. 1823-24).
Also in the Kunhinyan Band is listed your relative Charging Eagle, age 55, born c. 1834-35. I note that his Lakota name is given as Wanbli wakuwa. The latter verb is often translated as 'chasing'; the verb usually used to mean 'charging' is watakpe. His wife is listed as No Name, age 56, and in the household is 8-year old grandson Owl Head (Hinhan nata). Next door lives Henry Spotted Eagle, age 26, who bears the name of one of Bull Bear the elder's sons. So he's likely a relative too.
The names on the Meat Records are a valuable clue into Kuhinyan/Kiyaksa Band political dynamics in the first decade of the Pine Ridge Reservation era. Presumably the men named as leaders of those family clusters would, if the old life had continued, gone on to be the next generation of headmen and elders.
Anyway, hope this helps
