Greetings from France , an Oyuhpe-Hca called Shell Boy ( Pankeska Hoksila- born around 1836 ) is sometimes given as a Shell Man's son (he was one of the four akicita of the Big Road's camp with Bear Looking Behind , Dog Eagle and Red Horn Bull ) then a brother of Two Face and Blckfoot ! Is it right ? Best regards

Greetings from France , by accident I had read somewhere on the net that it existed a "bone keepers society " among the Lakota ! I had never heard something about such a society and the only thing I had found was as follow : "According to Tyon (in Walker1980 ) the Bone Keepers Society made special love potions for young men rejected by women ; Using a hair from a woman's head they could her to suffer a violent , unceasing nosebleed . Eventually her father would be forced to ask the Bone Keepers to cure her , promising them in return that she would marry the young man responsible for her affliction ! " So , I would like to learn more about this society( of course they kept also bones but what kind of bones ? ): -What were their other duties ,their practices and their regalia ? -Who were the members , how were they selected and what kind of society was it ? (It that this society was a men society and that the members are very secret about their practices )

Hreinn , thank you for your post ! no I had no read the Collier's field notes because in France it's very difficult to find books or documents about Lakota people espacially in english ! But as you could see in my first post in that thread I'm very interested by the genealogy of these two men , so if you have some details I will be very happy to learn more about them and their whole family ! Best regards !

Greetings from France , As always, many years after it's very difficult to reconstruct the genealogy of famous chiefs without written contemporeanous proofs ! When we said Calfskin Robe's daughters maybe it's in Lakota sense of kindred where the nieces called their uncles "father" and where the uncles called their nieces "daughter" ! It seems that Calico was the real son of a Calfskin Robe daughter ( father Thunder Bear ) Best regards

Before the year 1840/1845 Two Face and Blackfoot belonged to the Southern nation (Itokaga oyate ) sub-band of the Payabiya members of the maximal band Shiyo ; Around the years 1840 , a group of brothers and cousins including Two Face , Blackfoot ,Thunder Bear joined the Shkokpa and married daughters of Calfskin Robe The reunion of these two tiyospayes formed a new band called Tapishleca . Around the year 1850 Big Ribs who was a headman of the Southern Nation found a lot of kettles with legs abandoned on the trail by white people ! After that, the Southern Nation tiyospaye took the name of "Kettles with legs" ! So, Two Face and Blackfoot belonged to the "Kettles with legs" tiyospaye of the Tapishleca when they were hanged .

Greetings from France 1)following the Dietmar's thread (oct 27 , 2019 ) Little Bear , a prominent Hunkpapa chief , was given as the Long Soldier's father but I had Little Bear born in 1836 and Long Soldier born in 1819 so , if these dates are right we have a little problem ! 2)In the last Carlo's thread Hawk Man , killed at LBH , is given as a Long Soldier's son but before I had Hawk Man as a son of Bear Ribs -So I would like to know what are the real ties between all these men ? Best regards .

Greetings from France , very interesting thread about Big Ribs especially the list of chiefs and headmen which must be met by his délégation but in that list I have found several names which are unusual to see (at least for me ). -Hair Plait for the oglala tribe -Long Face for the Brulés -Bear That Look Back for the Brulé's Corn Band -Single Horn ,Bad Hand and Black Fox for the Oyuhpes (is this Black Fox the same as the chief of the Cancahuhan? I doubt because that group had left the Bad Faces for the Oyuhpes around 1876 ). -Little Bull of the Miniconjous (cited as the chief of the Wak-To-Ni-La by Hayden in 1857 / 58 ) So, does anyone have any informations about these men (sub-band of belonging ,summarized genealogy and history )? Thank you very much for all details you could provide !

hi Dietmar , here is what I have found about Lance Owner the supposed father of Fast Thunder : On march 1871- 14 th , he surrendered at the Red Cloud agency with the No Water 's band ;In his teepee were Fire Thunder and Stinking Foot and they were assigned to the Red Cloud's band ! On march 1877-30th , without authorization , he left the Red Cloud agency with Bad Ree and their families to join the Spotted Tail agency . On october 1877 he was not on the list of the Oglalas transferred at the Red Cloud agency but in décember of the same year he was in the Loafer band's census of the Spotted Tail agency ! Best regards .

Greetings from France , the tread about the bands of the Cheyenne tribe ,especially Masikota group , is very interesting and I have learn very much about their relations with the Lakota ! I knew since a long time the main bands of that tribe but I always want to learn more because I have read elsewhere different stories that I would understood : 1)It seems that sometimes some families used to camp apart of the main band of which they were members ; these groups , maybe sub-bands , had their own name and I would like to know to what main band they belonged and possibly their headmen and their history . These groups are (but maybe there are others ): -NAKOIMANA (the Bear People ) -WOKPOTSIS (the White Cunning ) -NOTAMIN (the Northward Facing ) -TATOIMANA (the Shy People) of which chief was Buffalo Chief I had also heard about a White Wolf band ? 2)In 1850 Thadeus.A.Culbertson said that the tribe was divided in 3 bands : -Dog Soldiers band -Half Breed Band -Yellow Wolf Band What bands (except for the Dog Soldiers) composed the two others bands ? Many thanks !

I'have a question for mr Bray : I your post of may 13 , 2013 concerning te organisation of the Oglala tribe in 1804 , you mentionned the maximal band Shiyo with three sub-bands ( Shiyo Tanka , Homna and Shiyo-Suhula ). In your second post (may 12 ,2017 ) about the same subject these three names had disappeared , so I would like to know what they represented ! Many thanks !

In the middle of june 1853 , near Fort Laramie , a band of Miniconjou led by Little Brave had a fight with Lt Hugh.B.Fleming and his group send by the Lt Richard.B.Garnett ,commander of the fort ,to take 2 or 3 prisonners as hostages after the killing of a soldier by Miniconjous warriors !
I would like to learn more about this Little Brave (his band , his kindred and maybe more about his life ). Thank you !
