According to "Lakota Warrior", his autobiography, he was the son of a Minniconjou chief and nephew, later adopted son of Sitting Bull. The dates are correct.

Don't feel guilty, charlie. There are so many of the same name everyone could be right! At least it's got us all talking!

frank. Just visited your website for the first time. Great! Most of the pictures I haven't seen before. I guess the Jack Red Cloud is Red Clouds' son. I remember he was shamed at the Rosebud in '76 when the Shoshone scouts took his warbonnet, knowing he was too young to have earned it. Keep up the good work!

Good site, Annie. I didn't know there were any Lakota scouts with Custer. I heard the story about Dorman before. I believe the story refers to him.

The one seated in the centre of the big group looks a lot like Dull Knife.

There is an excellent book about Lakota women. With My Own Eyes tells the history of the 19th century Lakota Susan Bordeax Bettelyoun, the daughter of a French-American fur trader and a Brule Lakota woman. She was raised near Fort Laramie and experienced firsthand the often devastating changes forced on the Lakota. As she grew older she became increasingly dissatisfied with the way her peoples' history was being represented by non-Natives. This book represents an attempt to correct misconceptions about Lakota history. For anyone interested in Lakota women it is an excellent read.

I seem to remember too that this photo was taken during his time with Cody. Note the butterfly on the hatband!

Can't find any more information about the Council than you have, clw. There's bound to be more out there. It's just finding it.

I'm as confused as you are. Minniconjou? Hunkpapa? Sans Arc? Cheyenne? I'll go for Sans Arc. Other suggestions welcome! The language is certainly Lakota.

Just to confuse matters more, there were two High Bears! Both aka Tall Bear. One was Sans Arc, the other Northern Cheyenne.
