A lot of good information there, clw. I wasn't aware he had actually took part in the fighting at LBH. Most accounts say that he got the women and children to safety and stayed with them for protection.

Diane. There was a High Bear aka Tall Bear who was at the LBH. He was Sans Arc and died in 1910. I don't know if it is the one you referred to.

Thanks for that, ephriam. When I said Lame Deer had joined Crazy Horse I meant it the way you said. You have given me more information than I have been able to find. I shall certainly look up the book you recommend. I wasn't aware of the story regarding the decapitation. Thanks again.

I have read that Lame Deers' band joined Crazy Horse's band sometime after the LBH. There was also a band of Cheyenne present (White Hawk?) But Lame Deer elected to stay out after Crazy Horse indicated he was going to surrender. I don't know if the Cheyenne stayed with him.

There was a Three Bears aka Two Bears wounded at LBH and died two days later. But he was Hunkpapa. There is also a Sitting Bear, an Oglala, in the warrior list, but no information about him or his death.

You may well be right about White Hawk. I hadn't heard of any Cheyenne being with Lame Deer but then details of the fight are quite sketchy. It's difficult for us to understand why these Indians volunteered to fight against their own kind but I think there are several possible reasons. The attraction of a uniform and a pony and gun because they would have to hand in their weapons and ponies when they surrendered. Perhaps to get away from the inactivity and boredom of agency life. Or perhaps it was because of their warrior tradition. A chance to live again the old life even briefly, a chance to win honours and scalps and booty, a chance perhaps to feel like a warrior again.

Was the Ice you referred to as a supporter of Crazy Horse Lakota or Cheyenne? I'm asking because Miles' scouts were all Cheyenne. You're right. It is confusing.

I see from the Billings Gazette that Sitting Bulls' remains will not now be re-buried at LBH. His family have changed their minds and now want him buried somewhere only the family will know, similiar to Crazy Horse. Two of the reasons given were that they want no monuments or commercialisation of his gravesite. They.ve had enough of that. The other reason is that LBH is on the Crow Reservation and the Crow and Lakota were traditional enemies. As to the true identity of the remains the family are prepared to submit to DNA tests to prove the identity one way or another.

The information I have is that it was White Bull who scalped both Lame Deer and his nephew Iron Star.

Info on Lame Deer is very hard to find and no photographs as far as I know. The only piece I know is that he was killed in May 1877 fighting Nelson Miles' troops.

Black Moon, Hunkpapa war chief of the Fox Warrior Society, was killed during the fighting on Reno Hill.
