well, this drawing was called ''Sinte and his six wives" but Grandpa says that it was Sinte's Lakota humour and no one got it. But yes many men had more than one wife back then. But the term ''wife'' was not what we think of it now. Some wives were just brought into the family, say when her husband died, a man would take her in to his tiospaye and tipi and she would live/work as part of the family. Thats how I understand it anyway.

hihanni waste
25 years! Waste! my hunka brother John Tail was alcoholic-he could not get a job, could not take care of his kids, so drinking was his escape like so many others. He hung himself four years ago. At his funeral I vowed to never drink again. I haven't . Much happier and coping is easier. I have no desire to ever drink again. What it does to the People and the children makes me sick.
what was your ''fyi" ?? through lakota eyes was too short? i am still learning my Lakota, but not used to writing it. It's not a written lanquage anyway! Good to see after 25 years you have not lost your language.
oh--and aguyapi zizipela!!

Thunderheart was great. Not much has changed unfortunately. It was filmed up near Wambli which is the other side of the Badlands. The Stronghold and Wounded Knee in the film are not the actual sites. My hunka brother was in that movie. He was also in Dances With Wolves. He was one of the warriors that followed Costner around. He was the one who waved from up on the hill.
This whole thing is another way to keep the Lakota down. First of all, the Oglala side was used for bomb testing, among other horrible things, and the land there is filled with shells, mines and other dangerous leftovers. The only thing for tourists out there is a dilapatated little ranger/info station. How come? How come on the ''white tourist'' side you have stores and hotels and campgrounds and gift shops? How come in the town of Interior, right off the border of the rez, you have 3 bars and 3 booze shops?? To sell to the Indians, thats why. Another White Clay.
What we want, and have been fighting for, is to have these things up by the White River on the Oglala side of the Badlands. It would bring employment to the rez. It would give tourists a reason to come here. It is a straight beautiful drive from Rapid City thru the Badlands to Wounded Knee to Pine Ridge, with many beautiful and historical and sacred sites on the way. The people are owed much money and the Federal Government and the Tribal Government keep it from the people. Much of this is in my film. The people want this. There are no jobs. Hence the poverty and alcoholism. Desperation. Ok, sorry for the rant but thanks for this outlet to voice opinions.
