I'm a genealogist and family historian and have been working on my family tree using DNA as help to help sort out some of our lost lines. I believe White Hawk and Joseph DeSmet Lewis 1805-1889 are the same person. The is a clear connection between the descendants of Joseph Four Bears, Two Lance, Joseph Black Spotted Horse and Mary She Walks Forward who married William Hodgkiss and then later to Yellow Man in Crow Creek. Joseph DeSmet Lewis we know had a second with that liked in Pine Ridge when he was traveling with Father DeSmet as a interpreter and so was Ms. Galpin who said White Hawk was her brother. Their is also a written account of a Women called Black Spotted Horse Women show up in Lower Brule and telling John Lewis DeSmet that she was his sister and that they share Joseph DeSmet Lewis as a Father. What I have been trying to get is a male to male descendant of White Hawks line to do a Y-DNA test to see if it matches our family male descendants of Martin Charger and John Desmet. I have done a Y-DNA test of both and they are European and are a perfect match to each other. Martin Charger did say while in Washington that Joseph Four Bears was his brother I believe he meant half brother.

From my research using DNA and hints from oral and historical accounts Joseph Four Bears, Two Lance and Joseph Black Spotted Horse, and their sister Mary Hodgkiss were full siblings their Mother was Louis Mound (Walking Nation) and their father was Joseph DeSmet Lewis 1805-1889. Making Martin Charger and John DeSmet their half siblings I have done a Y-DNA test on male descendants of Martin and John and it confirms that they share the same Y-DNA. The autosomal DNA of the descendants of Joseph Four Bear, Two Lance, Mary Hodgkiss, John DeSmet and Martin Charger so a common ancestry. If any of the other male descendants where to do a Y-DNA test it would confirm this. Her Good Ground from the DNA shows that she is one of the daughters of Francois Deloria and I believe Blackfoot Women. I do have a Female to Female descendant that has done her Mt-DNA and I believe in time it will show a MtDNA match to this line. Interestingly enough we do have a match on that line too a descendant of Josette Carey Sarcee Dumont. Which was Bazille Claymore's grandmother which who make Mary White Women Sarpy his cousin of some kind.

Her Good Ground and Joseph Turkey Head Lewis are my 3rd great grandparents. I have been using DNA to ferret out some of our family history and build my family tree. I have tested over a dozen relatives and have access to several more. I am no expert on the tribes and the inter tribal connections but if anyone would like to take a look at my research I believe it could help answer many of the questions

I'm a descendant of Good Ground Woman and Joseph Desmet Lewis have been work on our family tree using genetic genealogy and have been coming up with some interesting connection. I use autosomal and Y , Mt DNA to do my research along with others. However my knowledge of the family groups and their history is not that great. I am learning and I believe in time I may with some help be able to answer some of these questions.

My 3rd Great-grandmother was Nancy Claywalker (Skalmani) 1837-1910 in some probate letters it says that her Uncle was Bone Necklace and her Brother was One Ear which that family goes just by Ear. I have been getting members of my family to get there DNA tested through Ancestry. I'm going to try and find descendants of Bone Necklace to see if there is a relationship between or Families. Does anyone have any further information on Bone Necklaces family ties? Gary

I have a interesting note to add to this tread I took a DNA test from ancestry.com and did my family tree I am a descendent of Joseph DeSmet Lewis so I added Meriwether Lewis in my tree as my 4th great grandfather. After about 6 months I was looking at the program and noticed it had a shared in the DNA matches a Shared Ancestor hints. Basically if you and another member share a common ancestry and your family trees match it will show you how you are related to other members. Going through the matches I got into the distant cousin and found I have several that are from Meriwether Lewis family line. So I had my Great Aunt tested and it is showing the same thing. I have called Ancestry and asked if it could be a false hit they have assured me that it is not a false hit. I'm going to continue to test family members and I'm going to try and get members of the Martin Charger to take the test. We are also connecting to members that are descendants of Basil Clement - Claymore which confirms we all share the same Great Grandmother Anna Tamakoce Waste Win (Good Ground Woman). She has left a unique genetic lineage being first married to Thomas Sarpy a member of the Chouteau family the to Joseph Desmet Lewis the son of Meriwether.
