The chief in question was a Lower Brule leader mentioned on the thread dedicated to Lower Brule leaders. I had the good fortune to visit with descendants during my recent visit to South Dakota, and can confirm that this name was also borne by the Lower Brule leader Dead Hand. I'm not sure, but the name could have been handed down in the family, so I'm a little unclear whether the photo taken in the 1880s of Dead Hand is the same man as the One Who Kills the White Buffalo Cow recorded in 1865.

Could we add the Dead Hand image to this thread - Dietmar?

Very interesting. I´ve always wondered why there is so little information about One Who Killed the Buffalo Cow, although he was such an important Lower Brule leader over many years.

Dietmar, there's obviously a set of these portraits of these Lower Brule chiefs, taken by Bell, I think? When were they taken?

I checked two early LB censuses, 1886 and 1888, and they indicate Dead Hand was born about 1812 or 1813.

Kingsley, the SIRIS pages of the Smithsonan say 1880/1881.

So Dead Hand should be 67 or 68 in the Bell image. Sounds about right to me.

Hello Kingsley and Dietmar,

I couldn't help but to notice the similarities in the man's name being discussed in this thread compared to the man Kingsley posted about (on Nov. 20, 2013) in the Charging Eagle thread. Is there a possibility this could be one in the same man ?

In the C.E. thread, Kingsley's post was in reference to a man I have been seeking information about named, "Shoots For Them".
