"So let's get started. You offered that only Sitting Bull's wives and children left. Ernie in his oral history claims it was more than that. Right now, for the sake of argument let's say it was somewhere in between. One might pin it down later by getting hold of the Pine Ridge enrollment records. Unless you have a copy it might be something I could to order. Secondly you indicated that McLaughlin gave Sitting Bull's wives and children the right to leave. In all the National Archive materials that I read I didn't find that at all. Ernie says they arrived at Pine Ridge during the summer of 1891 but were not enrolled until 1894. If McLaughlin 'gave' them the right to leave did he notify Pine Ridge or Agent McGillycuddy? For that point, since it is McLaughlin, I think there would be a strong chance that he would have written something about that down. And if he did know they were going to Pine Ridge I would think as a responsible agent he would have notified McGillycuddy...unless there was something more devious going on. It seems to me sending two women and their children out on their own outside his jurisdiction when prior to that they were taken to Fort Yates as a 'we'll keep you safe here' move by McLaughlin seems to go against the grain. You should know in Ernie's oral history he says they went to the stronghold because they feared McLaughlin would send the police after them again so they wanted to be in an area where they could run off and hide in the badlands if they got word of any impending move against them. He also says that it wasn't their idea to go to Fort Yates but that it was an attempt by McLaughlin to keep an eye on them. What say you on this part?
I had to figure out where White Clay was to the Strong hold because i have the Grey Eagle's sister living in White Clay in 1892. I have not look at the Mclaughlin Papers in a long time i think its been at least 20 years since i went though his papers but there is where i would start, he has thousand of papers so i am sure he wrote down everything. The archives in Kansas City are great i could live there because there is so much information. After all these years i find that I have to take family stories and records and compare them because some stories maybe just a little off, it is one of the reason we are doing the Lakota History conference because i find that one part of the story is in Canada, one in Pine Ridge one part in Lower Sioux and Cheyenne River so we have to listen to all the stories and put them together to see the whole picture. Anytime you have a third party in the story the story changes so we have to be careful when you are talking about Tribal histories because everyone is related to each other. People tend to mix their world view in with our tribal histories. When one person does something outside our world view it effect everyone in Indian country.
I just dont think its right to argument about history we should be researching and compiling history. So with that said, I guess you better get to the archives and look though the Mclaughlin's papers. Of all the 57 Chief of Standing Rock it will take a life time to research them all and i have only put in 20 years now. I am in my glory research my people history. I have done a great deal of research on the life of McLaughlin and his history because i wanted to know him, His wife was a descendant of the Chief Wapasha of the Mdewakanton who spoke Dakota. Mclaughlin really believed he could save the Indian by making them all Catholic. of course we know that dream never came true.

i never heard that any of Sitting Bull early wives were a sister to Iron Cedar Woman, but i did hear the Grey Eagle's sisters the Last two wives, had a sister in Pine Ridge that is why they went to Pine Ridge after their husband was killed.
LaDonna, thanks for your reply.
I forgot to mention that Flying Hawk's quote about his mother, is from the book Firewater and Forked Tongues by McCreight.
If we take a look at the possibility that the Oglala sister of Seen By Her Nation and Four Robes could have been Iron Cedar Woman (Flying Hawk's mother). Where their parents were Iron Tail and Last Woman. It would mean that (old) Iron Tail was father of Iron Cedar Woman and grandfather of Flying Hawk.
That could explain the close connection between Flying Hawk (b.1852) and Iron Tail (b.1851). Flying Hawk mentioned several times of his friend Iron Tail in the book Firewater and Forked Tongues by McCreight. Where there is a photograph from 1911 where they pose together: Flying Hawk + Iron Tail + McCreight + McCreight's son. Where Iron Tail (b.1851) could have been the grandson of (old) Iron Tail, the father of Seen By Her Nation and Four Robes. It would mean that Flying Hawk and Iron Tail were more than friends, where they could have been nephews/uncles.
White Clay district is now known as Oglala District on the Pine Ridge Indian Resevation. Red Shirt Village is located within it at its north western edge. Yet the southern part extends to about 9 miles north of the town of Pine Ridge. Pretty extensive, close to 50 miles long. My father currently resided on a piece of land that was originally allotted to mercy jumping bull, other names surrounding the allotment are Weasel Bear, Running Hawk, Rock Mountain, Austin Name Him (son of Rock Mountain and Maka Papta), Black Elk, to name a few.......
I was told by the late Gerald One Feather that the community of Oglala Jr. in the Oglala District (Originally known as White Clay District) on the Pine Ridge Reservation is made up of all the Titunwan.
Ladonna I am Curious about this portion of the genealogy; did wallace little and standing holy have any children? Curious because I have a grand father named Wallace Little B. 1901, Died 1984. My great grandfather is named Amos Little and in at least one article he is listed as a Hunkpapaya and given the name Iron hawk.....not certain of his birth, have it ranging from 1859 to 1886.....niether Amos or Wallace had allotment here on Pine Ridge Reservation. Would you have any insight on this matter.

Mildred Firethunder Cuny is my paternal grandmother. I don't know of any other children by Wallace Little Sr. other than 4 with Wilhemina Colhoff (my fathers half brothers and sister) and then he married Gramma Millie had many more children including Wallace Little Jr. or "Hook" has we call him. I am assuming that this marriage took place about 1920. Is there a record of this/date?
Is there land records for Grandpa Wallace at Standing Rock? Amos? any known Little/Ironhawk connection that you know of?
Appreciate it Ladonna....love the sitting bull geneology there are so many names who have land allotment locally around my home. They are no longer around so i assume many left back to Standing Rock. I want to make a map of the sitting bull geneology allotments, if i ever get that done I will put it on here. unless you know of an existing one.
