Has anyone ever located a copy of the photograph of Kaateney when he went on the delegation to D.C.? I have found a colorized version, but I would like a copy of the original. Anyone help me out please?

Sorry, I pass may you ask Siris? Siris has that colorized version. Thats the first time Ive ever seen him at the delegation. Also, fyi, Taza as at a different delegation than the one with Loco and Chatto. |

I only have the colorized version too, but I did see a copy of the original once (which was taken pretty much the same way as the others), that website no longer exists, but there must be a negative somewhere.

If anyone has the old website address, you can use the Wayback Machine to bring it up and (perhaps) save the photo. www.archive.org/web/web.phpImages don't always show and links don't always work, but it's worth a try. Simply put the address in the blank and click "Take Me Back" to see old pages of the website. Diane |

Does anybody know the exact meaning of the name Kaatenay? I have seen it translated as "Cartridges all gone" but also as "Looking Glass"...

I have always thought it means "cartridges all gone", I've never heard about the second meaning. I guess Perico may be able to help us out with this...  |

About KAE-TE-NAY (this is the correct indian's name) I have this translation:
"He fight without arrows". Born in 1861 in the Mimbreno band, he died in 1918 of pneumonia in the Mescalero Reserve (New Mexico).
He had two wives and a son called Kaywaykla.

Charlie, what is your source for that translation? In Western Apache Raiding and warfare from the notes of Grenville Goodwin it is clearly stated that Kaidine means Cartridges all Gone...

There are several translations of this name. The more usual name of this chief is KAYATENNAE from "Kay" or "Kah" (arrow) - "Yah Te" (to fight without) - "Nnè" (man or that man).
My source is the historian Eve Ball.
Then, the probabily more correct term should be: KAY YAH TE NNE'.
But the doubt remain...
