I found this photograph on SIRIS. Smithsonian states it shows Bloody Knife, but I´m not sure about this. Any opinion? Arikara man, Bloody Knife and Mr De Frane (by anonymous photographer) Copy from print furnished by Mrs Frances De Frane, Dawson, Nebraska. A picture also appears in "The Fighting Norths and Pawnee Scouts," by Robert Bruce (paper bound booklet in Bureau of American Ethnology Library, page 28.) Born with the Hunkpapas, [N.D.]. His father was a Hunkpapa Sioux, his mother an Arikara. He became a famous warrior and chief with his mother's tribe and served with Custer in the Black Hills in 1876. [1874 ?] Was killed while with Reno on the day of the Custer massacre. See biography in Handbook of American Indians by G.B.G. (includes error re the Hunkpapa Reservation. Bloody Knife was born before the Reservation was established. Mrs Frances De Frane's letter of 11-21-28 states that this picture was "taken with my husband when he was a soldier at Fort Helena...sometime before 1876 when Bloody Knife was killed...My husband is wearing a fox skin cap made and given him by Bloody Knife's sister." Dietmar, good afternoon and hope all is well. Sorry but am researching an image taken either by Pywell in 1873 or Illingworth in 1874. I have equal substantiation of each meaning I have no substantiation for either from the records I've been able to locate or folks have provided me. The photograph of the four men - Custer in a camp seat, Bloody Knife, then a white man, then a scout, and kneeling facing those three, another scout. I've seen that kneeling individual identified as "Little Sioux." The man in the photo with De Frane looks like a match. Any help is appreciated...on both. Thanks Dietmar and all best...Rod

Howdy everyone and hope all is well with you. I've been asked to review some artwork in a private collection. The provenance is verified and some of the artwork given to the original holder is now collected at the SDSHS. About a third or more of the collection is by an artist named "Okicinintawa" and the holder indicates his grandmother and great aunt, the recipients of the art, said he was Hunkpapa and that the drawings were done in 1890-91. His drawings are signed with his name glyph and Lakota name in lead pencil. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks and all best! Rod.

Good morning everyone and hope all is well with you. I just recieved an email from the President of McFarland that Biilaachia-White Swan has been officially released as of today! They are in the process of filling pre-orders. First my appreciation to all for the patience and support on this project from start to finish. She did tell me that part of the hold-up was paper. Appears that paper milling/production in the U.S. took a major hit like everything else. I am just glad to have it out for everyone to read.
I've not seen the actual book yet but she also said I'd be pleased with it although it may not be with the paper type I expected.
Anyhow...Biilaachia-White Swan is now ready to take you on a journey...all best to everyone and stay well!
Regards, Rod Thomas

Good morning everyone from the south Puget Sound...glorious summer day and hope all is well with you all. FINALLY - WE HAVE A BOOK! Minus a few remaining "give and takes," the page proofs have been returned to McFarland. I am not certain yet as to the exact publication date but Biilaachia-White Swan is on the final lap. Seven years of research, one year finding a publisher to do all 160 illustrations - photos and artwork - in color, and two years waiting in line as the pandemic slowed publication. The book is available for pre-order at McFarland Books here - mcfarlandbooks.com/product/biilaachia-white-swan/. You'll read this in the Preface and it has meaning more than I can say even now. "About two years into rooting around archives and collections, online and in person, talking and conferring with people who had traveled many of the same trails, and occasionally just the plain old-fashioned hunch, enough came to light to try to “find White Swan.” It was about the same time on one of those “look-see’s” that I visited with him in the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery. I just stood there, in silence, looking out over the headstone, down into the Little Big Horn River valley and out to the Big Horn mountains on the western horizon. After a while, I glanced down and promised him this story—his story—of a Crow warrior, a revered army scout, and an accomplished artist—would be known. Ladies and gentlemen … it is my honor to present Bíilaachia…. White Goose, more popularly known as White Swan. I look forward to the day when I can visit him again and tell him Diswaleiichiweé biilápaache élahchek Chisaálahchek Ahó káashiilah—“My friend, your story is now known. Thank you for sharing.” All best everyone and see you on the high ground! Rod...

Thanks Diane! This is a major addition to Standing Bear's story and his artwork. I'm going to contact the archivist at Standing Rock to see what and when may be viewed by non-tribal members.
Hope all is well with everyone and please have a great day!

Thanks everyone! Along with everything else, the pandemic slowed up publication. McFarland tells me things are back on track...fingers crossed!
All best and please have a great day!

Now I understand. I will try the "way back machine" at archive.org and see what I can find. I thought I had posted just before my alert about the Fouch site but cannot find it. What I posted was that in the top five of my research projects is a history of early U.S. western photographers. I know of some but there are so many and now with digitization of collections these show up with some effort. But I don't understand the histories of them - who were they, where and when did they shoot, collections, archives, etc., that hold their work, etc. - nor do I have a good feel for the importance of each. Any help to getting me started is appreciated - references, histories, etc., - anything so I can start at square one. Thanks...as always.
Take care and stay well...Rod...

Good mornin' all...thanks and no apologies necessary. As I have discovered, there are broken links throughout the board along with missing images, in most topics, even to the "main site" of the specific link - museums, libraries, etc. Just gone. I'll be going through more over the next few days. Crazy but the problem with the deterioation of digital data discussed two decades ago that now appears coming true. All best and stay well!!!

sparky, welcome...and yes, the Burbank letters are most enlightening. I first found them in researching my first book of all the Indigenous artwork of the battle of the Little Big Horn to include that of White Swan. I cited most of those involving White Swan then in Rubbing Out Long Hair: The American Indian Story of the Little Big Horn in Art and Word published in 2009. My forthcoming full-length biography of White Swan, including all his known artwork, is due out from McFarland Publishing soon. It can be pre-ordered at this link: mcfarlandbooks.com/product/biilaachia-white-swan/. Happy New Year and all best in your research! Rod Thomas
