Jinlian ~ interesting stuff. Thanks!
If you have more information and/or photos referencing Lakota women of ANY division would you start some new threads and share them?

At one time (early 20th century?), the breed was almost lost. I wonder about the breed's early history too Frank, as I owned one myself. Let me rephrase that, I lived with one. She was a sweet, gentle lady, but -- shall we say -- a LOT of dog. And very, very wet and drooly. Which is why I had to find her a wonderful, but new home -- she tended to drown children. She could run faster than the horses and just TRY and stop her.
Which is likely one of the main reasons why Custer had a passel of them. Dragged them everywhere, much to Libbie's chagrin, as she was usually the one doing the dragging.

siris-archives.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?uri=full=3100001~!92198!0#focus Does anyone have this photo? I thought it might have been on that CD that Kingsley bought. Pawnee Killer and His Braves, 1867. Taken by Theodore Davis. In 1867! The great warchiefs like him still ruled the plains. I'm kind of surpirsed anyone had nerve enough to take a photo of PK, 'braves' and all. But I'd certainly love to see it. Wait -- now that I read it closely, I think it's a photograph of a sketch for Harper's. But still... Edit: Sorry. I missed the fact that grahamew referenced this above.

There is an enitre thread with many, many different photos on the LBH board... lbha.proboards12.com/index.cgi?board=Indians&action=display&thread=1582&page=1He's very interesting, especially in that photo. He wears his hair in the style of an Ashke warrior -- those who stacked themselves to the ground and fought to the death. His hair would not have been worn that way lightly. Though he wears Euro clothes, he simply makes them his own. There's little adornment and he carries his canupa. Yet we read he was an agency NDN, and probably not out at all that summer. Ephraim says that 'several sources indicate that our Red Shirt was the son of a white man and a Lakota mother.' And 'that by the time of the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, he was a rising young man within one of the military societies [explains the hair], an "up and coming" individual among the Wagluhe. This band had been led by the prominent headman Big Mouth, until he was shot and killed by Spotted Tail....'

In the last PM I had from her, she was looking forward to this new forum. Her input here, among many other things she contributed, will be greatly missed.

I get it now. But it does make the general category unlikely to be used where it is. Would it be too cumbersome to keep the band categories and just move them out to the main list? I think we could ungroup the Arapaho and just have one board. Then subjects something like --"Teton/Lakota", "Hunkpapa Lakota", 'Mnicoujou Lakota", etc. Less clicking that way too. I don't like the sub board structure, but I do like the bands in different categories.
BTW, thank you for putting CH in both places.

Ah, Miyelo. The book budget has been asborbed by the need to eat. And buy feed and hay. And cat food and dog food. And chickenfeed. I think that's everybody. If not for this unfortunate circumstance, I would have bought your film long ago. It looks excellent! (Got any extra commods? ;D)
Geez, I've stopped watching the news. It's too scary.

Yes, it's odd, I'll grant you that for sure! I think you're right about those things not being much of a problem too. But considering the emotions and the general turmoil of the times, I can also see the issue raising it's ugly head. As to nothing having been said -- until relatively recently, we've had very few scholars (you can count them without running out of fingers) who cared. Personally, I think there's a lot of NDN history waiting to be discovered by the outside world.
I think the term your looking for is 'full blood'.

OK -- I'm really confused. I see Brock's post, but no category for the board he made it on. In fact the only way I found it was to go to his profile and look at his posts. Then I found a sub board way down at the bottom of Teton/Lakota. Huh? Am I having one of my blonde moments?

Brock
Jillian
Well Jillian, it may sound weird, but I also sounds like there may be some documentation. You'll note Brock says the Spotted Tail family members have been consulted.
Be interesting to see what develops.

Brock's point is a good one. We've already got some excellent material on the Mnicoujou buired in one about the Hunkpapa -- I think. I've already forgotten exactly where I saw it. General categories would be useful.
