The catalogue SITING BULL UND SEINE WELT (Sitting Bull and His World) has now been published by the Museum fur Volkerkunde in Vienna, Austria, accompanying the exhibition of that name. The exhibition opened in Bremen late in 2008, before moving on to Finland, and to Vienna in December 2009.
The catalogue has been edited by world-renowned scholar Christian Feest and is lavishly illustrated in colour and black-and-white with photographs and artefacts, many not widely known. European and American scholars have contributed, including Christian himself, Peter Bolz, Candace Greene, and two essays by myself. All text is German.
Even if you don't read German, the book is a must for the illustrative content and the sheer beauty of the artefact - entirely worthy of its great subject.

Miyelo, I looked through the catalogue... and yes, there is one: Sinte (Oglala Lakota) 1881 Division of Anthropology, American Museum of Natural History, New York According to the book, German artist Rudolf Cronau collected the painting. He himself desribed the image: "The great spirit [Wakan Tanka] rides as a God of Thunder on a winged horse. The feet of the horse are also winged. On the tail sits the war eagle. The God holds some lightnings in his hand. One of them strikes down and kills an Indian." Mostly there are Hunkpapa and Yanktonai drawings from Standing Rock in the book, but also some Oglala drawings from Pine Ridge, for example by an Oglala named Black Horse.

Dietmar---THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! WOPILA TANKA!! Sinte is a great grandpa who lived and rode with Crazy Horse and surrendered with him at Fort Robinson. He was taken to Buffalo Bills Wild West Show and that is where he met Cronau. We have pictures of some his drawings, and some are in a museum in Germany but they won't give them back to Grandpa. Thank you for posting this you are very kind.

You´re welcome, Miyelo.
I´m sure you said it some time ago, but is it the Landesmuseum in Darmstadt who has the drawings of Sinte?

Miyelo, Dietmar,
I'd say there are no Sinte drawings in Germany. Those in the two Sitting Bull exhibitions have been from the Cronau collection in the American Museum of Natural History, New York. The entire Cronau collection, or most of it, should be available online, at least it used to be.

No that is not true. I will get the name of the museum. Grandpa and his wife were over there to speak about ten years ago. They were in a museum and there in an exhibition was one of his drawings! They freaked out.
but yes most of them are in NYC but we have never been able to see them. I did find an old book that has 6 photos of his drawings and tells all about Cronau but have not found any of them online.
If either of you can point me in the direction to at least get photos of all his drawings that would be great. Dietmar I printed this one you posted and Gramps was so thankful. He said that THIS is the one they saw in the German Museum. Now weather it's still there or not is another question!

Miyelo, Still, I am not aware of any Sinte drawings in German collections. I would assume that your family may have seen the Sinte drawing in the 1999 Sitting Bull exhibition at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt. The drawing posted by Dietmar was exhibited there. But this one, too, was on loan from the American Museum of Natural History. You can view the Cronau collection there, using the URL just provided by buffaloman. Hans

Thanks Hi, During my visit in Darmstadt I dropped by the shop at Hessisches Landesmuseum, and I bought the exhibition catalogue you are discussing about SITTING BULL "Der Letzte Indianer". Besides I bought a very interesting photo book in Germany language "LAKOL WOKIKSUYE" by Helga Lomosits & Paul Harbaugh. Best regards Jari
