First lady Michelle Obama sent a letter to Crow Chairman Cedric Black Eagle on Oct. 7 announcing the federal designation. The tribe is the first federally recognized tribe in Montana and the fourth tribe in the nation to be so recognized. In completing the lengthy application for the designation, the tribe focused on its culture, such as the Crow Fair and Rodeo, Crow Native Days and the schools' efforts to incorporate the Crow language into the curriculum. The application also gave a nod to Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, a Crow historian and author, said Breanna Polacik of Nittany Grantworks in Livingston, who helped complete the application. Polacik, who worked with Frances Pretty Paint, of the Crow Tribe, said the next step will be a community meeting to discuss where to direct future Crow preservation efforts.
