Iron Tail (Sinte Maza) was an Oglala Lakota who fought at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. He also performed with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during the 1890's and with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show near Ponca City, Oklahoma from 1913 to 1916. He died of pneumonia on May 28, 1916 while traveling by train to South Dakota. He was one of three models for the Indian Head nickel designed by sculpture James Earle Fraser. It is noteworthy that Iron Tail is listed in the Sitting Bull surrender ledger at Standing Rock Agency, Sept. 1881. He is listed as one of the sons of Little Hawk, the Oglala headman who was a brother (a half-brother) to Worm the father of Crazy Horse.

I think that I am right in saying that Iron Tail's warbonnet used to belong to the late Colin Taylor and is now in Hastings Musuem in West Sussex, UK.

Here's Iron Tail with Sam Lone Bear from the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave site: Here he is with some companions (it's from a group of similar photos). Is that Benjamin American Horse in the foreground?

Henri has sent me another portrait of Iron Tail by a not indentified photographer. It is in the Gertrude Kasebier book by Michelle Delaney: Thanks Henri!
