Generous Man - Ahxsi-tapinaEssays in Memory of Colin Taylor, Plains Indian Ethnologist
In September 2004, Colin Taylor, one of the world’s most prolific Plains Indian ethnologists, passed away. His impressive work spanned a period of over 40 years in which he tirelessly researched, wrote, and lectured about history and culture of the North American Plains peoples.
A great number of publications bestowed him a unique reputation. Among his books are global bestsellers like “The Plains Indians” (with W. Sturtevant) as well as special studies like “Wapa’ha – The Plains Feathered Head-dress”, “Yupika – The Plains Indian Women
Dress”, and “Catlin’s O-kee-pa”.
His intellectual splendour as well as his heartfelt enthusiasm for the subject fascinated people in the Old and the New World. His scholarly impact on the ethnological scene can’t be underestimated. But beside his greatness as a scientist, Colin Taylor was a formidable human being. His friends all over the world always felt his warm humanness and admired his knowledge. The title of this volume reflects the view everybody, especially the Indians, had on Colin Taylor.
In this volume, some of his very best friends, prominent anthropologists and ethnologists, deliver essays linked with Colin Taylor’s lifelong work. The result is a collection of first rate scholarly papers which represent a wide range of Plains Indian subjects focussing on material culture, Colin Taylor’s most favoured field, edited by two Canadian anthropologists: Hugh Dempsey, the greatest authority on Blackfoot Indians, and Arni Brownstone of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, in collaboration with Colin Taylor’s wife, Betty.
The authors of this book represent a kind of “Who’s Who” of American anthropology. They gathered to honour a great scholar and his heritage.

This volume not only revives Colin Taylor’s enthusiasm for history and culture of North American Indians, it is a reference work of fundamental significance for the anthropological world. Each essay represents a contribution for research and understanding of the people of the Plains. The volume is richly illustrated.
