Rod. I have read through all these post with interest. I am interested in the later years of White Swan's life. His meeting with numerous artists, photographers, naturalist, etc. (Seton, Sharp, Schreyvogel, rinehart, Miller, Curtis, Throseel, etc.) and his travels to the Indian Congress 1898 in Omaha, and the Sheridan Fair in 1903. Particular how he communicated with people having become deaf and dumb for is injuries. I ask as I am interested in disability history. My wife and I are working on a biography of the deaf and partially blinded Plains Indian Historian George E. Hyde who may have encountered White Swan at the Indian Congress. I would appreciate any information on White Swan's life between 1890 and 1904. I look forward to your book.

Greetings, Artist E A Burbank made a acquaintance with White Swan when he spent time at Crow Agency in 1897. Burbank wrote his Uncle Edward Ayer back in Chicago regularly, and mentioned White Swan a number of times in his letters. I have been doing post LBH research on White Swan, and found the letters provide very interesting insight into not only Burbank, but everyone with who he came in contact, including White Swan. These letters are hosted at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and for White Swan specific research, check out letters written in 1897 from Montana. You might have to do some sifting through a bunch of letters. It appears Burbank made it to Crow Agency around 4th of July, and was disappointed to find most of the Indians were over in Sheridan Wy for 10 days “dancing”, and had to wait for them to return so he could have them “sit” for him (at $2 a sitting) so he could paint them. Anyway, some interesting stories about White Swan can be found collections.carli.illinois.edu/digital/collection/nby_eeayer/search/searchterm/burbank%2C%20e.%20a.%20(elbridge%20ayer)%2C%201858-1949!Manuscripts/field/creato!format/mode/exact!exact/conn/and!and/order/title/ad/asc

sparky, welcome...and yes, the Burbank letters are most enlightening. I first found them in researching my first book of all the Indigenous artwork of the battle of the Little Big Horn to include that of White Swan. I cited most of those involving White Swan then in Rubbing Out Long Hair: The American Indian Story of the Little Big Horn in Art and Word published in 2009. My forthcoming full-length biography of White Swan, including all his known artwork, is due out from McFarland Publishing soon. It can be pre-ordered at this link: mcfarlandbooks.com/product/biilaachia-white-swan/. Happy New Year and all best in your research! Rod Thomas

Good morning everyone from the south Puget Sound...glorious summer day and hope all is well with you all. FINALLY - WE HAVE A BOOK! Minus a few remaining "give and takes," the page proofs have been returned to McFarland. I am not certain yet as to the exact publication date but Biilaachia-White Swan is on the final lap. Seven years of research, one year finding a publisher to do all 160 illustrations - photos and artwork - in color, and two years waiting in line as the pandemic slowed publication. The book is available for pre-order at McFarland Books here - mcfarlandbooks.com/product/biilaachia-white-swan/. You'll read this in the Preface and it has meaning more than I can say even now. "About two years into rooting around archives and collections, online and in person, talking and conferring with people who had traveled many of the same trails, and occasionally just the plain old-fashioned hunch, enough came to light to try to “find White Swan.” It was about the same time on one of those “look-see’s” that I visited with him in the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery. I just stood there, in silence, looking out over the headstone, down into the Little Big Horn River valley and out to the Big Horn mountains on the western horizon. After a while, I glanced down and promised him this story—his story—of a Crow warrior, a revered army scout, and an accomplished artist—would be known. Ladies and gentlemen … it is my honor to present Bíilaachia…. White Goose, more popularly known as White Swan. I look forward to the day when I can visit him again and tell him Diswaleiichiweé biilápaache élahchek Chisaálahchek Ahó káashiilah—“My friend, your story is now known. Thank you for sharing.” All best everyone and see you on the high ground! Rod...

This morning I was surprised to receive notice that Biilaachia-White Swan had been reviewed in the November 2024 Midwest Book Review! www.midwestbookreview.com/lbw/nov_24.htm#NativeAmericanStudies is the link. The reviewer noted that it was "Fascinating, informative, documented, "Biilaachia-White Swan: Crow Warrior, Custer Scout, American Artist" is a masterpiece of historical scholarship and a welcome contribution to Native American history and biography collections. An essential addition for community and college/university library Native American Studies collections and supplemental curriculum studies lists, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of students, academia, and non-specialist general readers." Needless to say, I'm pleased that all the support and help over the seven years it took to get the story into print shares in this appraisal...thanks and good reading to all! Rod...
