Lakota (Hunkpapa) saddle throw, 1870s
Native tanned bison hide, with geometric beaded panels on each end separated by a thin red trade cloth panel along one side, with a split in the center for the pommel, hide fringe along the edge of each side and the back edge of throw. Length (not including fringe) 50 in., width 11½ in.
Provenance:
According to inscription in ink on the face of one side, it was captured at the Big Muddy (Missouri river) on April 27th, 1881 and given as a gift to a Mrs. Campbell. Mrs. Campbell was identified as Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell, nee Hughes, wife of 7th Cavalry Trooper Charles W. Campbell who had participated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Her older brother was 7th Cavalry Private Frank (Francis) Campbell who had lost his life at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
