Hau Mitakodapi: Many of you are familiar with the book: A Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux by Amos Bad Heart Bull. University of Nebraska Press 1967. i think a newer edition has been published, On page 417 (1967 edition) has an illustration about Two Sticks killing four cowboys in 1893. There is a hill drawn at the top of the page labeled Paha Canweknayanka (Hill in the Timber). Does anyone know the location of this hill? I know it is located north of the White River.

Carlo: Thanks for the heads-up on Dakota Goodhous's blog. i will check with him. Mark Diedrich and I just finished a book: Mniwakan:Place Names and History of the Spirit Lake Dakota. Only available from the bookstore at Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten, North Dakota. Our college is going to celebrate 50 years in 2024,
i have been in the Seven Fire tribal place names study for 50 years. The Mniwakan book is an inch thick and I could not get all the local places names in it. As my president says- they will go in he next book. Also available is Is The Grass Dance of the Spirit Lake Dakota, from the college. This book contains the duties of each of the Officers of the Grass Dance, and includes other dances. This is from oral interviews from tribal members since 1966.
I have questioned many Pine Ridge residents over the years as to the location of Paha Canweknayanka Without success. Paha = Hill; Can = trees, woods, etc; Wekna = among; Yanka = Lays. The Hill that Lies Among the Trees.

I am ashamed of myself. I Googled the name for Cache Butte and discovered I already posted the location on this board. I even spelled Cache wrong. the location is Section 1, Township 38 West, Range 47 North Shannon County, South Dakota. I was looking up another place name under Paha and discovered I didn't have the location. Now where did this location come from-that I posted years ago?
