Here is a list of all the Dakota and Lakota Reservations in the United States.
There are a total of 25 Reservations and Reserves in the USA and Canada.
i used to hear the names of these reservations on a daily basis when the Dakota / Lakota language was heard in conversations.
Minnesota:
Prairie Island Indian Reservation, Tinta Wita (Prairie Island) named for an island in the Mississippi River.
Alternate names "Red Wing" and Heminican (Mountain-water-wood) the name of Barn Bluff along the northwest shore of Lake Pepin.
Tribal headquarters is at Welsh, MN.
Prior Lake Indian Reservation, Tintaotunwe (Prairie Town), Prior Lake itself is Mdemayato (Blue Bank Lake) named for the blue color of the hills surrounding the lake.
An alternate name is Sakopee or Sakpi (Six) their former Chief, and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Community. Located just south but with in the city limits of Minneapolis - St. Paul on 258 acres of land.
They have a closed population of some 400 tribal members, each member receives about fifteen hundred dollars a month. They are the richest of all the Sioux because of the proceeds
from the famous Little Six Casino opened in 1982.
Lower Sioux Indian Reservation, Cansayapi Wakpa (Redwood River) a tributary of the Minnesota River. They are located near Morton, MN.
The name Redwood comes from a red painted tree that was a boundary marker between the Cheyenne and Dakota. the "lower" names is used
because they are lower down along the Minnesota River. They are Mdewakanton and Wahpekute Dakota
Upper Sioux Indian Reservation, Pezihutazizikapi Wakpa (Yellow Medicine River) the yellow medicine is Menispermum Canadense or Moon Seed.
They also called Granite Falls for the nearest town. They are Sisseton - Wahpeton Dakota.
Nebraska:
Santee Indian Reservation, Isanti (Live by the Knife) referring to Knife Lake by their original home at Mora, MN.
The Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska headquarters is at Santee, NE. They were invited to the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, and so became part owners of the Black Hills.
South Dakota:
Flandreau Santee Sioux Reservation, Wakpaipaksan (Bend in the River) of the Big Sioux River. The remains of Little Crow or Taoyateduta (His Red Nation)
is buried in the Presbyterian cemetery, he was interned in 1971. This Tribe owns a casino.
Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, Bdehdakinyan (Crosswise Lake) the lake lies at an angle to Big Stone Lake. This reservation lies partly in North Dakota.
Established in 1867 for the Sisseton - Wahpeton Dakota.. This tribe has a casino located at Hankinson, ND.
