Here is a list of the Dakota / Lakota Reserves in Canada along with their Indian Names.
The Dakota name for Canada is Uncitamakoce or Grandmothers Land referring to Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837 to 1901 and now it is Queen Elizabeth.
Sioux Village Reserve #56 Tipoihanke = Dwell at the end. They are the furthest east in Manitoba.
Their modern name is Dakota Tipi First Nation. the reserve is located just southeast of Portage La Prairie on Lot 25.
Long Plain Reserve #6A Tintahanska = Long Plains. They are located just southwest of the city of Portage on Lots 99 and 14.
Their modern name is Dakota Plains First Nation.
Oak Lake Dakota Reserve #59 Canunpa Wakpa = Pipe River, for a deposit of Gray Gypsum [Hydrous Calcium Sulfate] is to make Black smoking pipes.
Their original name was Utuhu Bde = Oak Lake
Their modern name is Canupawakpa First Nation, they are located near Pipestone, Manitoba.
Oak River Reserve #58 Wipazuka Wakpa = Saskatoon / Juneberry River,a tributary of the Assiniboine River.
In 1961 they changed their name to Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
This is the largest Dakota Reserve comprising of some 9,374 acres. the nearest town is Griswold, Manitoba.
Birdtail Creek Reserve #57 Zitkadnsintewaste Wakpa = Beautiful Birdtail River, a tributary of the Assiniboine River.
Their original name was Cankagaotina =Log Cabin Dwellers for a Wahpetun band of that name.
The name of the this area was Pahacokamya = Middle Butte,an elevation west of Birtle, Manitoba.
Their modern name is Birdtail Sioux First Nation, Virden, Manitoba.
There used to ne a Turtle Mountain Reserve #60 located on the Canadian side of the North Dakota Turtle Mountain.
The Reserve was called Heyatanka = Great Mountain. It was in existence from 1877 - 1909.
The few remaining residents transferred to Ft. Peck and Spirit Lake.
The next reserves are located in Saskatchewan.
Standing Buffalo Dakota Reserve # 78 BdeTanka = Big Lake. The Reserve is named for the son of Chief Standing Buffalo.
The Big Lake is a widening of the Saskatchewan River known by its French name Lac Qu'Applle = Calling Lake. Now called Echo Lake.
Wood Mountain Reserve# 160 Canhe =Forest or Wood Mountain or Canowanca = Timber All over.
Their Modern name is Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation. Their members are descendants of Sittings Bull's Band.
White Cap Reserve #94 Wapahaska = White Hat. named for their original chief. located near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Originally called Moose Woods Reserve, now White Cap Dakota Sioux First Nation.
Sioux Wahpeton Indian Reserve # 94A Tintamibena = Round Plain. The topography reminded them of their Minnesota homeland.
They are located near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.their modern name is Wahpeton Dakota Nation.
