Seeing Dietmar's recent post and being desperate for an excuse to stop doing work, I thought we could dedicate a thread to the curtain photos. We don't know who the photographer is or when they were taken, although the inclusion of Spotted Tail Jr would imply late 1870s - early 1880s as he looks pretty similar in other photos taken during that period. That the sitters are, as far as we know, Oglala, Sicangu and Cheyenne does make me wonder if the photographer is Cross... Frank Lock (of Hair), a son of George Sword Spotted Tail Jr. This doesn't have the blanket in shot but it was on an auction site with the two above and the dress would suggest the same time period. Said to be Cheyenne Off the top of my head, I can think of at least two more, one of whom is Yankton Charley, but I'll have to dig them out later, unless Dietmar beats me to it!

I think Gregor identified this man as Stands First, Oglala: Photographer Edward Curtis wrote about him: Born about 1844. Distinguished himself as a young man by riding out alone to meet a single Apsaroke who charged from the enemy line. Stands First did not shoot, and received a wound in the breast; but as the two passed each other he struck the Apsaroke with his coup-stick, a feat of great honor. The following year-seemingly in 1869-two hundred Sioux attacked the Apsaroke camp near the fork of the Missouri, and in the thick of the fight Stands First was twice wounded in the back. In the battle of the Little Bighorn he captured the standard of the troops.curtis-collection.com/curtis/curtisinfo.asp

STANDS FIRST: born circa 1849 in Southern Oglala tribe, Kiyuksa (?) band. Indian's name: TOKEYA NAJIN. Brother of Old Shield and Fast Wolf. Present at Little Big Horn, said to have captured Custer's personal flag. He died in January 1917 at Pine Ridge Agency.
