Along with the Bretz album of Kiowa and Comanche photos, Cowan's has recently auctioned an album of Irwin and Mankins photos taken at Anadarko and Fort Sill, some dated 1886, but some are clearly later. Lena Fisher (daughter of Rudolf/Rudolph) as born in 1879 and this photo shows someone who may be in her late teens or slightly older. Some of these will be familiar images, but it's a great collection and here is a selection:
Lena Fisher
""Collection of 58 silver gelatin photographs bound together and mounted on 6.75 x 10 in. cardstock album pages, including 56 images that measure 3.875 x 5.5 in., (mounted on recto, 2 per page), and 2 that measure 5 x 8 in. A small portion of the photographs are accompanied by handwritten captions, and 2 bear the back stamp of Irwin & Mankins, although the majority were almost certainly produced by the photographers who were active in Chickasha and Duncan, Indian Territory, ca late 1880s-1890s.
The majority of the photographs feature both studio portraits and less formal, outdoor views documenting Kiowa and Comanche chiefs, braves, scouts, women, and children that lived near Anadarko and Fort Sill. At least 3 images show famed Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, including a studio portrait, an image showing him with two of his wives, and a distant view of Parker in the Wichita Mountains. Additional subjects include Kiowa warriors Ponto and Lone Bear mounted atop their horses; 2 photographs of Kiowa-Comanche Reservation leaders Silverhorn (Haungooah), Anko, and Comanche Jack (Watchymansookwat), who also served as tribal policemen; Kiowa Chief Hummingbird and his family at camp; Comanche leader Red Bird; and Kiowa Chief Lone Wolf's mother.
A number of camp scenes are also housed in the album, including the two larger photographs, which show Anadarko and Fort Sill in 1886; a Wichita grass house near Anadarko; 2 scenes from Anadarko captioned "Skinning Beef" and "Beef issue Day"; and 3 views of Indians gathered at the Commissary at Anadarko, with one annotated in ink, identifying the offices of Major Campbell and Dr. Graves. A loose boudoir photograph showing "Wichita Indian Village Near Anadarko, IT, 1886," as captioned on mount, also accompanies the album."
