can anyone document with primary sources if One Bull (also known as Henry Oscar One Bull), nephew of Sitting Bull, had a daughter named Rose One Bull (also known as Spotted Horse Woman), born about 1876 and married to Joseph Red Bear (abt 1881-1952). A generation down the Red Bear family is in Ziebach County on Cheyenne River Reservation.

Hi californian, ten years ago or so I tried to track down One Bulls family. This was not so easy as the general interest in One Bull was not as great as in Sitting Bull. This is waht I have so far: Oscar/Henry One Bull - Tatanka Wanjila (1853 – 1947) 1st Spouse: Hohektewin - One Who Kills Assinboine Woman (1861 -?) 2nd Spouse: Yellow Hair Woman 3rd Spouse: Spotted Horse 4th Spouse: Maniwin - Walking Woman 5th Spouse: Wakan Iyotake - Rose Sitting Holy 6th Spouse: Red Whirlwind Woman (1866 – aft. 1940) Spouses 1 to 3 : no further information. Children with 4th spouseManiwin / Walking Woman ChildrenSon: Assist Them/To help (1886 - ? /died young) Son: Fish: (1887 - ? /died young) Daughter: Margret One Bull-(Naki Wizipi win-Jealous of her Woman) Daughter-Jenny/Clara One Bull (White Shell Woman)-b. 1891 Children with 5th spouseWakan Iyotake / Rose Sitting Holy ChildrenDaughter: Gleskagli Rose One Bull (1876 – 1937) married into the Red Bear family, relatives of the Clown family Daughter: Comes Last Woman Ida One Bull (1881 – 19xx) Son: Ehake Iyanke Running Last (1882 - ? / died young) Son: Tatanka Nonpa Two Bulls (1885 - ? / died young) Children with 6th spouseRed Whirlwind Woman (1866 – aft. 1940) ChildrenDaughter: Jenny/Clara One Bull (White Shell Woman, 1891 – 1972?) but see aboveDaughter: Tasunkatokecwin - Cecelia One Bull (1894 – 19xx) Cecelia (Brings a Blue Horse Woman) was an Informant & translator for Stanley Vestal Daughter: Margret One Bull (1909 – 19xx) but see above, I don't know Margrets mother, some sources say she was adopted
In News Paper articles and Foto captions we find Rose, Ida and Cecelia One Bull.
Stanley Vestal mentions in his „Sitting Bull“ Cecelia One Bull Brown as informant. Reginald & Gladys Laubin mention in their „Indian Dances of North America“ two daughters of One Bull: Magli and Mni Ca’pi Win (unfortunately I could not identify both. Magli = Margret?) Cecelia was the mother of Ina Brown, who was the mother of Ron „His-Horse-is-Thunder“ NcNeil, a former president of Standing Rock Reservation. Regarding Sitting Bull's supposed adoption of One Bull. I asked Earnie LaPointe about this. This is what he basically says about it: "One Bull was NEVER adopted by sitting Bull. Why should SB do a" Makin-a-relative ceremony "with One Bull? One Bull was the son of his older sister, he was already a relative! With the Lakota, you only adopt a person who is not related! SB has always referred to One Bull as a nephew, never as a son. " So much for Ernie LaPointe. BTW: One Bull's father "Makes Room (Mnikowozu)" did not die in 1857, as is often read, but according to Ernie in 1921.
Maybe we can fill the gaps together. Regards, Gregor

Wonderful photograph, Dietmar. Never seen it before. Shot in the range of 1890 to 1900, I would guess. Maybe this wife is Whirlwind Woman. With regard to the above News Paper clippings from 1940. According to a report of A.B. Welch, the daughter is Margret One Bull Brown.

Margaret One Bull wrote a reader´s letter to the Sioux City Journal in 1928 with valuable information:
THE MAIL BAG Nephews of Sitting Bull, Little Eagle, S. D., Aug. 22, 1928. To the Editor; I have read in The Sioux City Journal about Chauncey Yellow Robe. I think you have made a mistake in saying that Yellow Robe was the grandnephew of Sitting Bull, for we don't know him, as he is not our relative. One Bull and White Bull are the only nephews of Sitting Bull living; One Bull at Standing Rock reservation under Superintendent E. D. Mossman and White Bull at Cheyenne reservation under Superintendent Roberts. One Bull is the full brother of White Bull. Their mother is the full sister of Sitting Bull. One Bull is my father; he is 73 years old, I am the youngest of four sisters: Mrs. Rosie Red Bear (Gleskaagliwin), Mrs. Regina Spotted Horse (Mnioapiwin), Mrs. Cecelia E. Brown (Hintoagliwin) and myself, Margaret One Bull (Nakiwizipwin). I am [??] years old. Mrs. Red Bear has six children, two married; Mrs. Mary Clown, who has a baby girl, and her brother Henry; a baby girl, children living. son living in […illegible…] White Bull; he has six children living- […-illegible…] with one grand- daughter. Two of his daughters are married, so White Bull and One Bull are great-grand-fathers of six girls, of which three are living. What I have written about our relative is true and so we are not afraid to tell you. Margaret One Bull. (Nakiwizipiwin) Sioux City Journal from Sioux City, Iowa Tuesday, August 28, 1928
Gregor, Margaret, Cecelia and Rosie Red Bear all appear in your list above. It seems that Regina could possibly be a daughter of One Bull´s third wife.
The daughter in your 1940 photo with One Bull and Welch to me looks like Margaret.

hi Gregor thank you very kindly, this is very helpful information and much appreciated. Your comment about One Bull and his supposedly having been adopted by his own uncle makes totally sense. If I have my facts correctly, typically an uncle would be the mentor of a young boy that is to say being groomed to be an adult as a hunter and warrior and that is where things tend to get misunderstood, particularly the Lakota sense of relationships where uncles are considered as fathers and aunts as mothers. I'll have some more information for you which I will share with you separately. Hi californian, ten years ago or so I tried to track down One Bulls family. Hi Dietmar this is most helpful primary source information and completely confirms my research results (and with considerable help by Ephriam, gratefully herewith acknowledged ). Rose One Bull thus seems to be the oldest surviving daughter of One Bull and thanks to your below referenced citation I now have the parallel proof for what I had been looking for, this is to say that she was married to Henry Andrew Red Bear whose family hailed from the same district as One Bull (near Bullhead on Standing Rock Agency). I will let you know in a separate communication about my reasons going into this particular subject in the first place. Margaret One Bull wrote a reader´s letter to the Sioux City Journal in 1928 with valuable information: THE MAIL BAG Nephews of Sitting Bull, Little Eagle, S. D., Aug. 22, 1928. hi Dietmar this is a great image. One Bull looks still very young, if the photographer was indeed D. F. Barry then it likely would be one of his wives, maybe Red Whirlwind ? She looks pretty young, he would have been about 30 or thereabouts, would have been probably late 1880's. I´m not sure if we had posted this picture by D.F. Barry before, but this is One Bull with one of his wives (or is it a daughter?) and a child:

hi Gregor adding to my earlier comment, the remark about One Bull's father, "Makes Room (Mnikowozu)" that he died in 1921 I am not so sure, don't wish to question Ernie's statement, but he would have been nearly 100 years old at the time of his death. Was Makes Room at Cheyenne River or Standing Rock ? Maybe we can find him in the Census (Rations Lists) to document this somehow. hi Gregor thank you very kindly, this is very helpful information and much appreciated. Hi californian, no, this is not Ernies mother. One Bulls daughter Jennie/Clara One Bull (born in 1891) married a Joshua Spotted Horse. These Spotted Horse families were not related. BTW: Ernies family lived in the Pine Ridge area and they had no contact until the 1950s, when they reburied Sitting Bull near Mobridge.
