Hi there, has anyone heard of the book "The True Narrative of the Five Years' Suffering and Perilous Adventures by Miss Barber, Wife of" Squatting Bear, "a Celebrated Sioux Chief (1876)". Or even read it? A Mary Barber is said to have married a Brulé chief "Squatting Bear" in Washington in 1867. She allegedly suffered tremendous pain from the Lakota for the next 5 years of her marriage. Is this book fictional or is there a real core? I had never heard of the book until today. Thanks Gregor

Hi Gregor, if you ask me, the whole story of her marriage and horrible life among the Lakota is made up. If you check the details of her story, nothing seem right. There never has been a Brule Chief Squatting Bear who allegedly was a delegate in Washington in 1867. I have to grab this book again to go into more details, but honestly, it´s not worth it. Her awful book has been published since the 1870s and I´ve even seen a brand new edition on Amazon recently. But you don´t have to buy it, it´s available for free in the net. archive.org/details/truenarrativeoff00barbrich/page/n5/mode/2up/search/%22squatting+bear%22?q=%22squatting+bear%22

Hi Dietmar, I have read a few pages on the Internet and already had the suspicion that the work is fabricated. As you wrote, I am not aware of a Brulé Chief "Squatting Bear" who is said to have visited Washington in 1867. Your judgment about the book is enough for me, there are enough other books worth reading.
