Life of Sitting Bull and the Indian War of 1890-'91 by W. Fletcher Johnson. Edgewood Publishing Company, Philadelphia PA 1891. 597 p.First edition of this early biography of the Sioux chief who led his people during years of fierce resistance to United States policies, published in the year following his death, illustrated with numerous photographic plates. By a former editor the New York Tribune, “noted for the encyclopedic range of his writing,” this contemporaneous history of Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka) records the career of the Lakota “chief who led the Teton tribes in their resistance to white invasion”. This book has some value for historical accuracy and is the first one that details information about Caroline Weldon, the Brooklyn NY Indian rights activist that had befriended Sitting Bull. Later historians and authors, such as Stanley Vestal, heavily drew information from this book, albeit not mentioning it in the bibliography.
