BLACK HORSE (Mo'kohtavo'ha) He belonged to Northern Shutai band leaded by the Dod Soldier's chief LITTLE BEAR. In 23 april 1875 he fought with honour at "Sappa Creek" (Kansas): the H Company of 6th Calvary commanded by Lieutenant Austin Heneley (40 soldiers) attack the village. It was a massacre: died 2 soldiers (1 sergeant), 19 warriors and 8 women and children. Black Horse was wounded in the side but survived, and in 1876 he also fought at Little Big Horn. He married three times. He died in 1936. A curiosity: Austin Heneley, after the battle, tried to sell to a Cheyenne squaw a warbonnet that belonged to a warrior killed at Sappa Creek. The squaw told him: "it will bring bad luck". One year later, Heneley drowned crossing a river in Arizona..... (source: "Four great rivers to cross" (P. Mendoza) and "The life of George Bent" (G. Hyde)) Other info about this great warrior? I have send a photo of him to Dietmar and I hope he post it.

Hi Charlie, and others, Please let's not perpetuate the use of the word 'squaw', especially on this forum. It is a derogatory term for Native American women and should therefore not be used, except of course when quoting older texts verbatim. It's any easy mistake to make, as the word was in use with writers until quite recently and still pops up now and again in books, but it is offensive and demeaning. I remember this issue was discussed here years ago, but couldn't find the thread anymore. Thank you.

I agree with the terminology comments.
Also, the Henley story isn't correct. What actually happened is that following the Sappa Creek/Cheyenne Hole fight, Henley was in possession of the warbonnet belonging to Stone Forehead, the Cheyenne Arrow Keeper. This was seen at Fort Lyon, by Amache Prowers, the Cheyenne wife of a prominent rancher, John Prowers. The Prowers lived at nearby Boggsville. Amache assumed that Stone Forehead had been killed, and prophesied Henley's death. The warbonnet had however been loaned to a warrior who had been killed in the fight. Stone Forehead was still alive, although he died later that year, or early 1876. Henley was however drowned, as mentioned. By far the best account of all of this is John Monnett's 'Massacre at Cheyenne Hole: Lieutenant Austin Henely and the Sappa Creek Controversy'.

Charlie is it possible in your first post you meant Black Horse was a sub-chief in the Suhtai band led by LITTLE BULL - the suhtai chief killed at the battle of Sappa Creek - instead of Little Bear? I really love your short bios always rich of interesting details. I ask to you and all the precious experts of the forum (Dietmar, Kingsley, Hreinn and every other) if it's possible to fill a card of this kind (Birth/Death, original name, band...) for each of the Northern Cheyenne Council of the 44 chiefs elected in 1876, and why not also for Southern Cheyennes? I'm trying to build a most-complete-possible spreadsheet of cheyenne bands partitions and leadership. Thank to everyone who will help me! Clarence

Is this the Black Horse of the Black Horse Ledger fame? I'm guessing he became a scout after he surrendered because some of the events in the ledger show him/his colleagues in almost full uniform.
