Here Hairy Chin is standing in the middle of the Standing rock delegation in 1888:

Hairy Chin seems to have been a prominent Hunkpapa, but he has been a bit of a shadowy figure in Lakota literature... I once read it was he who saved Gall's life following a stabbing near Fort Berthold... And I have found that Hairy Chin died in 1889 only three days after performing as Uncle Sam in a parade... Anyway, this is another portrait:

What do we know about him? I can't find his name in the Sitting Bull Surrender Census. Did he go by another name? Son of Iron White Man? Was he the father of Crow Ghost? Or is that the Arikara Hairy Chin and the Arkara Crow Ghost? It's unfortunate that in the Waggoner book, Emily Levine says there is no surviving copy of her biography of Hairy Chin.

D. F. Barry stated Hairy Chin "was a brother to Chief Long Dog."

Hmmm. Thanks. That's interesting. I've seen a Gilbert photo of Hairy Chin's son - though it doesn't look like the photos I've seen of Crow (Crow's) Ghost and the identification of people in his photos is sometimes wrong. I understand from Welch that there was also an Arikara Hairy Chin who McLaughlin brought to Standing Rock to help teach farming, or something like that. Now I come to think of it, I've also seen a Gilbert photo of Crow Ghost, though he's also been identified as someone else! The Hunkpapa Crow Ghost was in his early 40s in the 1881 Surrender Census and this guy looks at least ten years younger

Yes, Hairy Chin is a bit of a shady person. This is what I have compiled over the years about Hairy Chin. Hairy Chin Hunkpapa/Yanktonais (?) (1820? – 1889) Iku Hin-la Hairy Chin - a brother of itancan Long Dog and a relative of Rain-in-the-Face - was a medicine man ("Bear Healer") of the Hunkpapa Lakota. Hairy Chin's father was known as Iron White Man (Source: Lawrence Crow Ghost) Hairy Chin was among the first to settle on the Standing Rock Reservation around 1870 (?). Along with his brother, he was one of the “Sitting Bull People” and was present at the Little Bighorn. There he (?) allegedly also introduced the young Oglala Black Elk into a first healing ceremony. The patient was Rattling Hawk, who had been injured during the Rosebud Battle. In October 1888, Hairy Chin was part of a Standing Rock delegation led by agent James McLaughlin that had been sent to Washington to negotiate land cessions. He was also photographed there by C. M. Bell. Hairy Chin was married to his wife Josephine. One daughter was named Elbow and one son was named Kangi Wanagi (Crow Ghost, also Lawrence Crow Ghost). One grandson was named Frank Hairy Chin. On July 4, 1889, Hairy Chin attended the Bismarck National Day parade dressed as “Uncle Sam.” Two days later, Hairy Chin died on the reservation. Possibly pneumonia. However, the Hunkpapa believed that it had something to do with the disguise. Apparently no hunkpapa has ever dressed up as “Uncle Sam” since. Donovin Sprague pointed out in his "Standing Rock book" that there were two Hairy Chin families on Standing Rock. Hairy Chin as Uncle Sam I have this man as Lawrence Crow Ghost Is this the daughter Elbow ?

Thanks. That's the Gilbert photo I had as Hairy Chin's son, but I had no name attached to it: The trouble with a lot of the Gilbert images is that they have been misidentified. I'm not saying this one has, but it is worth bearing in mind. But... I've also seen this group identified as Christina Two Bull, Crow Ghost, Mary Ironroads. Admittedly, I've also seen them identified as No Heart's children. And this man identified as Crow Ghost on the Colonel Welch site. Or is this the Arikara Crow Ghost? And then we have this man and his wife, also ientified as Lawrence Crow Ghost (Sihasapa/Arikara) and his wife, Goes To War Woman or Zuyahiyayewin. Surely the same man as above and thr same man on the Welch site? And another... Another Hairy Chin photo, for good measure... And another... with Two Bears.

Grahame, I would say that there is a certain similarity between Hairy Chin and your Crow Ghost. At least this similarity convinces me more than the first photo ("Lawrenece Crow Ghost"). But who knows ...
