Heads up for everyone interested in the First Sioux War of 1854-56. New book coming end of November this year, by the late John McDermott and R. Eli Paul: All Because of a Mormon Cow: Historical Accounts of the Grattan Massacre, 1854–1855Should be a great source of information on a less researched episode of the Lakota-U.S. conflicts. Published by Univ. of Oklahoma Press: oupress.com/ECommerce/Book/Detail/2308/all%20because%20of%20a%20mormon%20cow

Received my copy in the mail this week, looks to be an interesting read over the holidays. Just read the introduction and it states that there will be a second part to this, focusing on interviews and reports from later years, so not necessarily eyewitness accounts. Haven’t seen a reference of this second book yet on the OU Press website; hopefully R. Eli Paul is able to finish this, as his co-editors of the first book have unfortunately passed away a few years back. Both books will no doubt become the premier go-to source references for the Grattan incident and the First Sioux War, an important but oft overlooked episode in Lakota history.

I read this a couple of weeks ago. It's perhaps not for the casual reader, but for those with an interest in this area it's a must.

Yes, a wonderful book I would recommend to anyone interested in Lakota history. Especially the accounts of Lakota eyewitnesses Little Thunder, Big Partisan and Man-Afraid-of-his-Horses (They fear his horses) are essential.

Glad to add my recommendation. All Because of a Mormon Cow is an essential source book for every student of the Plains Indian wars and of Lakota history. It is a fitting tribute to two of the editors, Jack McDermott and Sandy Lowry, both of whom were true scholars and deeply generous in sharing their findings and research. Their loss has been deeply felt. All power to Eli Paul for finishing their great project in fine style.
