I've seen this photo identified as Spotted Tail as a younger man, dated around 1860 (though I can't remember where and it was several years ago...) but it's not: it's a Tonkawa Indian identified as Anderson. Here's another with the same backdrop:

hi Grahame - these albumen prints themselves seem to be more in line with the 1880's and beyond from my experience with old photographs, but could certainly be a reprint of an earlier photograph. I agree with you that this is not Spotted Tail who's facial features are very different - the name "Anderson" could be perhaps the photographer's - not to be confused with John A. Anderson that was active on the Rosebud Agency. In fact now it seems clear to me why someone may have thought it might be Spotted Tail thinking that the name thereon stood for "John A. Anderson". Of course this is just my gut feeling.

The Tonkawas quite often took English names... or those names were given to them by Whites. Like Johnson, Joe, Grant Richards for example.

there is a series of Tonkawa photos, including the"Anderson" one, in the Southern Methodist Univ. archives. The photographer is identified as H. S. Schuster, taken between 1865-72. Perhaps at or near Ft Griffin TX
