The image Detmar posted shows agent DB Dyer, appointed in April 1884 after 12 years of John Miles. Dyer was replaced by Captain Jesse M Lee in 1885 when the agency was temporarily placed under military control because he was unable to cope with the Cheyenne, particularly the Dog Soldiers, who had issues with the way land was being leased to cattlemen and because of the number of settlers and white-owned cattle illegally on Indian land. The date given for this photo is 1884 mla.bethelks.edu/ml-archive/2006June/thiesen.phpIn the Heard collection, there are several photographs showing military manoeuvres in honour of Sheridan and one photo that seems to show the General, albeit in the distance: "Long distance photograph of military troops standing in formation. To the right and in front of the troops are four men on horseback, presumably one of these men is General Sheridan. At the rear of the photograph are several more men on horseback facing the left." heard.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16286coll5/id/242/rec/3The date given is 1882, like the photos of the 'scouts enlisting' on the website, so I'm assuming they're all actually dated July 1885 when Sheridan visted Fort Reno. A possible photographer for the 'scouts enlisting' photos could, I suppose, be E.B. Snell from Wellington Kansas. This is Cossand and Mosser's photo of "Riding on a Cloud." This is Snell's photo of the same. Not sure Snell's photo shows a particularly older man. Commonly given dates for Snell's work tend to be circa 1885, whereas Stotz seems to be active in the 1890s. Snell, on the other hand, did copy and sell other people's images, though those I've seen have been pretty obvious, like Notman's Sitting Bull and Cody. Since I first posted this, I've managed to find out a lot more about Snell: amertribes.proboards.com/thread/3413/snell?page=1&scrollTo=27046

Just found these at the Huntington site. They're credited to Cosand and Scribner and dated 1890: First Sergeant Meat and his family, Fort Elliott, Texas. Children of Yellow Bull and Meat, as above.

"Is this the same Black Coyote?"
Yes he is, Grahame... or that´s my impression, without being sure. Lt. Black Coyote (Arapaho) and the Captain Tall Bull (Cheyenne) were the leading police officers at Darlington around that time.

Some clearer Fort Reno images on Cowan's auction site related to the 'visit of Sheridan' photos Dietmar and I posted further upthread: Cheyenne chiefs waiting for the Commission from Washington Cheyenne and Arapaho scouts Cheyennes waiting for rations All taken at Fort Reno. Cowan's site suggests Lenny and Sawyers as possible photographers, but I'm pretty sure they didn't arrve in the general area until 1889 whereas these seem to have been taken in 1885.
