Hello, everyone I just discovered that my gr-grandfather, his parents, and siblings, appear on the Indian Census taken in Appomattox County, VA in 1880. The only tribal designation for them that I have been able to discover is the Awahilli people. I can find nothing online about this tribe. However, a good friend informed me that Awahilli is Cherokee for "Eagle." Please forgive my ignorance, I have only ever taken one course in American Indian Cultures, but is it possible that smaller tribal groups were/are branches of larger ones? Could it be that the Awahilli were Cherokee? I know that some Cherokee remained in the East, some of them hiding in the mountains of NC, VA and WV, among other states. Please, if anyone can point me in the right direction to learn more about the Awahilli, or make possible research suggestions, I will be so grateful. Thank you again! Cheryl
