Sladen, in his 1872 diary 'Making Peace With Cochise" states twice that one of the two Apache guides, "Chie" would be later better known as Mangus, son of Mangus Coloradas" I can't verify this. Any thoughts?

Yes, it is a little bit confusing, but ...
According to my Version of “Making Peace with Cochise” by Sladen (edited by Sweeny / University of Oklahoma Press, 2008) Chie – “the good natured guide” of General O. O. Howard and his Lieutenant Sladen - was “Cochise’s favorite nephew … most likely a son of Cochise’s brother Coyuntura (page 6). Chie had “recently married ….. a woman of Mangas Coloradas family” (page 6).
But on page 80 we find this sentence which brings some confusion: “Na-chise was called by the newspapers, Natchez, and our amiable friend Chie, took his fathers’s name, Mangas..” (see also page 98).
We could understand this relation in the way of Mangas was his father-in-law. But on page 135 we find an explanation for this confusion. On basis of a letter (Nov. 30, 1872) from a Capt. Coleman to General Howard, we learn that Chie married Mangas sister and that Mangas was not his father-in-law but his brother-in-law.
Hope that helps. Gregor

I don't know his wife's name but she was a woman from Mangas ghota, probably his daughter. Chie's mother I think was Yones, wife of Coyontura. Chee's son Hugh Chee is pictured in several situations as 'student' at Carlise Indian School.

Fun Fact: One of the last men to die with Victoro at the Battle of Tres Castilles was Tomaso Colorados, son of Mangas Coloradas and his first Mexican wife.

Sweeney acted that Chee was married with a daughter of Mangas Coloradas. COuld she be the youngest born circa 1855? or was she a niece of Mangas Coloradas?
