Does anyone know how long Sioux have owned Black Hills exactly? What was the year (roughly) when they first time claimed Black Hills for them?

The 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty was the first written document on the Black Hills.

The Black Hills is not owned but held sacred by 30 different tribes as a place to pray. The Lakota had it put in their Treaty in 1851 even though other tribes came to pray in the hills

Thanks La Donna. Do youhave any info on how long Lakotas have lived near Black Hills or on that area? Is the oral history lot different from "studied history" or how it is said? I mean when did Lakotas move to South Dakota area and where did they came from... somewhere east but where there? Thanks.

You are asking dangeous questions here.
I have to tell you that I can give you my belief only.
I have documented by our winter counts our histories. I know that before the great flood that covered the earth we went under ground at a place called Cave Hill SD When the water went away we came out of Wind cave.
I have found our people in the areas of Big Horn Mountain around 1600s also in nebraska and colorado in the 1600s.
The area that is now called the Great plains was a great sea that extended from Mantoba to kansas so we did not live the area of the plains until the water went away.
Now here is where the problem began the DAKOTA have been in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. Some people can not separted the tribes in location.
It is said we broke off from our Mother tribe the Dakota a round 1400s.
I have talked with the tribes in the east who speak a language close to our and they say they come from west so I guess a person can believe what they want.
My people are from here

Well then...here I go again ;D : Where would you say Sioux (and others natives of America) came from originally? Through Bering Strait like "about" 10.000 years ago? I'm quite interested to know how the info about these ancient history things has survived with the Sioux. Thanks again.

Hi Frank and Ladonna ! According to the History Channel TV show - we are going to have to rethink the "first American"!! It seems that artifacts have been found - that date to around 25,000 years ago and suggest several different sources ......... one was along the northern route from Europe to Iceland Greenland and then to Canada, ............ the other is from China/Russia and traveled the Pacific Kelp forest all the way to Baja Mexico !!!!! The native people of Australia have been documented as having been here for 40,000 years so why is it not possible the same goes for the First nations of America?
