Brule Sioux
63 years old.
15 years old when he went on the first war party. It was against the Pawnees. The leader was Red Gourd but he was killed in the battle during a hand-to-hand fight with a Pawnee in which both were killed.
At the age of 23 he led his first war party. It was against the Pawnees. They took some horses.
He was in 9 battles, mostly against Pawnees
In one battle at 17 he counted a first and a second coup both on women.
In two other battles he counted first cops and in another a third coup.
Four coups in all.
In counting coup they never count beyond four unless there are other tribes in which case each representative might count first honor or second as the case might be.
Iron Shell and Eagle Feather Side and Big Partisan or Big Chief and Little Thunder were the greatest leaders.
The most distinguished medicine man was Muggins according to Charley Tackett. Arrows would glance from him.
By hearsay he knows of the use of stone arrow points but never of having made them. Tey claim that Iktomi made and used them.
He is an expert counter of years by principle events. The work was taught him by an old man named Wah-man-u-sah (Steals Much). For example Hail Thunder counts about Little Beaver who was Pierre Dorion French man who was grandfather of Charley Tackett's mother. That was about 100 or more years ago, 98 years be figures it be now.
He has a piece of cloth on which he pictures the snows or winters. He has it at home near the Catholic Mission, 9 miles out.
In one of his battles he was shot through the left shoulder and an arrow glanced on the arm.
He was never counted coup upon.
