Meany Interview, undated, 1907:
Wounded Knee
Little Soldier A-ke-chi-ta Chi-ka-la Ogalala 60 years old
17 years old when he first went on the warpath. It was against the Crows. Iron Hawk was the leader. It was without results.
At the age of 20 he took the pipe to lead a war party. It was against the Shoshones. They got 14 horses.
He was in 30 battles mostly against the Shoshones.
In a battle with the Shoshones, they shot an enemy and his horse. Before the man was dead he was third to strike him with his lance with a spear at the head.
His father was named Little Soldier and on his death the son took the name. Before that his own name was Yellow.
He considers Crazy Horse the greatest leader of his people and Custer greatest of the whites. Custer never dug holes to fight in but led his men in the most dangerous places.
In a fight with the whites on Lodge Creek he counted coup on a soldier who had been shot by another Sioux.
He was in the fight with Red Bear Breath when 100 soldiers were killed. A soldier with his gun in his hand was counted coup upon by two Sioux but Little Soldier was second. In the spring near the same place they encountered a small party of soldiers. They shot one and Little Soldier counted coup second upon him.
He was too holy to be wounded. His mother made his shield with four men and a red circle in the center. She told him he would count coup on four men.
