For a while I lost the book by Jason Betzinez. But I found I had put it in my backpack, so when I went to the mountains it turned up again. Since Mr Betzinez was Warm Springs and very old when he wrote the book, I give more credibility to the facts. I know it is not perfect, but it has many good insights.
One thing I noticed from the book ... the band of Nde in Mexico commanded by Juh was not simply a southern band of Apaches. It appears that this group was more warlike and attracted participation from Nde who did not fit into other bands, or just wanted to conduct raids more often. In addition, Mr. Betzinez mentions that Juh's band contained several Navajo warriors who had chosen to fight for personal reasons.
It seems that these Navajo may have continued fighting with Geronimo, although it is not clear how many did this. But the question comes up - what happened to them? When Geronimo surrendered, did the Navajo also surrender and get transported to Florida? Or did they spit off and remain in the Sierra Madre, or go back to their own reservation?
Maybe it is hard to figure these things out.
