Hello All, I have a question regarding Northern Cheyenne and Lakota scouts under Miles at the 1877 Bear Paw Battle. In the opening stages of the battle, a duel occurred between a Cheyenne or Lakota scout mounted on a spotted horse and the Nez Perce warrior Peopeo Tholekt. Tholekt, down to his last round, managed to wound the scout, who fell from from his horse.
I am trying the determine the tribal affiliation of the wounded scout. During the duel, the two signed to each other, and Tholekt states that the scout signed that he was Lakota. But Tholekt also states that the scout lied to him, that he was really a Cheyenne.
I think Tholekt said that because he later thought all of Miles' scouts where Cheyenne. Further, in Miles' own memoirs he says that just two scouts were wounded at Bear Paw--Hump (who Miles says was Sioux) was shot in the stomach and White Wolf (N. Cheyenne) who was hit in the head. Tholekt's description of the injury to his opponent in the duel seems to match that of Hump.
Further, I just read the overview of Hump I and Younger Hump on this website, who was Miniconjou but whose mother was a Cheyenne--the younger Hump was also a scout!
I think the Hump wounded at Bear Paw was Miniconjou and that he did not lie to Tholekt--Tholekt is simply mistaken. I don't think the wounded Hump was the Northern Cheyenne Hump who was the son of Dull Knife and who was also a scout.
By the way, Tholekt's personal narrative of the duel is part of the V. McWhorter collection at Washington State University.
Any thoughts on this? Thank you for any information! Jim
