Thankyou so much, LaDeane, for all the amazing data you've posted over the last few weeks. Do you have comparable information on the Man Afraid of His Horse family?

Re;Bad Wound kingsleybray Kingsley-I have researched the entire Pine Ridge Indian census, of which I have copied 1886 thru 1900, the 1907 1913 1918 1925 1929 1930 1933 and 1937 and have over 365 families, recorded much from the Oglala Lakota College, the LBH Oglala thread (plus numerous other threads) the US census 1900-1910-1920-1930, and I have, at last count, 112 books related to the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Lakota Sioux. Rosie Tree Top didn't have any children. When he was getting old "Young Bad Wound" took her to the Lessert family and asked if they would keep her as she didn't have any relativies. She is buried at Inestimable Gift Cemetery in Allen, SD.

Some thoughts about Bad Wound: Bad Wound I -- Charles Turning Hawk mentioned in an interview that his grandfather was the first Bad Wound, "a big chief of the Tashnaitca" tiyospaye of the Oglala. Presumably Bad Wound I is the individual mentioned by Lewis & Clark. Hyde mentions that one of the Bad Wounds died in 1865 (I have not been able to verify his source yet); I suspect that this was Bad Wound I. Bad Wound II was the father of Charles Turning Hawk, who mentioned that he had a number of wives and as many as 26 sons! Based on his children's years of birth, I am guessing that he was born circa. 1800-1810. I assume he is the one who signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 and the Treaty of 1868. In the records of the Red Cloud Agency where he settled in the early 1870s, he is usually referred to as "Old Bad Wound" to distinguish him from his son "Young Bad Wound." Bad Wound II is listed in the agency records up through the 1880-82 period but is not in the 1886 census, suggesting that he died sometime in the early 1880s. (We have not found census records for the period between 1882-86) Bad Wound III or "Young Bad Wound" was born about 1832 or 1833 and assumed his father's role as leader of the Tasnaheca Band (Oglala). Like his father, he settled at the Red Cloud Agency during the early 1870s. He went to Washington, D.C. with the 1875 delegation and signed the Treaty of 1876. Either he (or his father) accompanied Red Cloud in May 1877 to meet Crazy Horse and other northern leaders as they were en route to surrender at Red Cloud. Bad Wound III married Good Woman probably about 1860 and then Red Top about 1873. His children included: Daniel (b. c1861), Noah (c1867-1930), Robert (c1871-1940) and Millie. Contrary to Donovin Sprague's comment in his photo book of the Pine Ridge Reservation, Bad Wound III died in late 1917 or early 1918 (I am still searching through the Pine Ridge Reservation records to find the exact date). Bad Wound III's children continued the family tradition of participation in tribal government. Noah served as a tribal judge and Robert became the first tribal President in 1935 under the Indian Reorganization Act. ephriam Hello. About Bad Wounds II. Is there any information about his family - his wife, sons? Previous lists are Tasnaheca 1870s - 21 family. It's all his sons?

I have new information from Oglala sources on Bad Wound I.
He was born in 1757, the son of White Horse Looking, into the Wachyunpa (Roaster) band. In those days the Wacheyunpa were one of the bands aligned with the larger Chokatunwan grouping -- the people nicknamed Sichangu, Burnt Thighs, or Brules, after their camp was destroyed in a prairie fire in 1762. So Bad Wound grew up in the Brule division. A kinsman, possibly a cousin, or alternatively his father's brother, Black Stone was a holy man. (Trying to clarify that relationship.) Black Stone had a brother named High White Man (a name passed down to one of Bad Wound I's grandsons).
The great Sun Dance of 1775 was held near where Sioux City is located today. Both Brules and Oglalas were present. There was a renewal of the Bull Headdress Wearers society (the Chiefs Society) in which four Oglalas were acclaimed as Shirt Wearers (we have the names). Bad Wound was only 18 years old, but he was invited to join the BHWrs as an ordinary member -- to replace a relative who had died of smallpox.
In the late 1770s the Oglalas were recruiting Brule people to join their tribal circle, using hunka adoption and marriage. Bad Wound was one made a hunka relative by the Oglalas. Then in 1781, the year of the terrible smallpox epidemic, when Bad Wound was 24, the Wacheyunpa band moved as a body to the Oglala circle. The Wacheyunpa merged their band organization with that of the leading Oglala band, the True Oglalas led by chief Standing Bull. Bad Wound then lived permanently with the Oglalas.
He had four wives:
Good Tipi Woman (Oglala) Blue Thunder (Brule) Beadwork (Brule - originally an Arikara captive) Red Tipi Woman (Miniconjou)
Their sons included Bad Wound II; and Black Stone, the father of He Dog and his brothers.
Chief Standing Bull died in 1793, and over the next few years Bad Wound emerged as the most influential headman in the True Oglala band - reflected his being named in the Lewis & Clark tabulation of Lakota chiefs.
Bad Wound's Oglala wife Good Tipi Woman was of the Tashnahecha-yuta band. So the Bad Wound family became identified with that band after his marriage in 1781.
In 1793 a famine on the plains led some Oglalas to settle with the Arikaras at their earth lodge village near the mouth of Cheyenne river. Bad Wound was one of the leaders. The fact that his third wife Beadwork was originally an Arikara captive, now a respected Oglala matron, helped the brief Arikara truce. The Oglala camp (Kiyuksa and True Oglala) left in 1795. (This Arikara sojourn is also attested in the Truteau journal.)
Bad Wound was the most widely influential Oglala leader across the fame 1795-1820. Hence his mention as Oglala head chief in Lewis and Clark's tabulation of Lakota leaders.
He died about 1825, at the age of 68, according to my Oglala sources.
