At this point I'm posting two lists from the period 1874-76, which have important clues as to the makeup of the Bad Wound extended family or sub-band grouping, the Tasnahecha, part of the larger Southern Oglala or Kiyaksa ("Kiocsie") village.
Red Cloud Agency census, March 1874 (original in National Archives-Kansas City Branch)
Includes 21 families, a total of 132 people, listed under:
”Bad Wound’s Band, Kiocsie
Bad Wound Sr Bad Wound Jr Hunt the Enemy Joint Secret Elk Hawk Shield Bear that makes all Suffer Medicine Horse Small Ring* Plenty [?] Game Long Bull Red Bull Black Tiger Two Bulls Charging Hawk Red Shield One Arm Small Battle, W[idow] Black Mare, W[idow] Tongue [deleted] Bad Wolf Grey Eyes [deleted, replaced by] Secret Bull”**
• * Small Ring is probably to be identified with Little Hoop, belonging to the Tasnahecha community in the 1890 Pine Ridge census. • ** Is “Secret” a mis-hearing of Sacred? So, Sacred Bull, Sacred Elk?
December 1876 Beef Issue Record, Red Cloud Agency (reproduced on printed page 125 of THE CRAZY HORSE SURENDER LEDGER [Lincoln: Nebraska State Historical Society, 1994], includes the following ‘beef band’*:
Young Bad Wound 5 people Crow Runner 6 people Broken Hawk 8 people Man don’t like C-nt 2 people Lone Wolf 4 people Medicine 5 people TOTAL 30 people
* At this time a beef was issued weekly or every ten days (varied from time to time) to a group of 60 people. So the Bad Wound beef band was entitled to half a beef.

Kingsley:
Been thinking some more about your interpretation of the Adams' journal with Bad Wound splitting off from Man Afraid's Hunkpatila band during the winter of 1844-45 and joining the southern Oglala as a new band leader.
Since I have been assuming that the Tasnaheca Band was much older, I had not paid much attention to a comment by John Colhoff -- but now it makes more sense. In his letter to Balmer (Nov. 16, 1949), he suggested that the Tasnaheca formed "around the 1840's and 50's." That would fit well with your timeline. This would suggest then that Charles Turning Hawk's comment (Mekeel field notes) that his grandfather, Bad Wound I, was "a big chief of the Tashnaitca" is inaccurate, since the band did not form until decades later.
I am only aware of two lists of the members of the Tasnaheca band. The first one is the 1874 Census by Dr. J. J. Saville that you posted above (21 families/132 people); the second is the 1890 census, which lists 25 families/93 people. Only a few of the names correlate. In the census records, Bad Wound's group is generally listed under the larger Kiyuksa grouping as the other southern Oglala bands are.
It is also interesting to note that the Tasnaheca were considered to be the parent band, in part, for at least two other Oglala bands: the Hokayuta (Badger Eaters) which split off about 1851 and the Cankahuhan (Sorebacks) which formed I suspect about this same time period. This might suggest some devisive politics within the Tasnaheca over the Horse Creek Treaty of 1851. The evidence suggests that Black Rock, the father of He Dog and head of the Sorebacks, was a brother of Bad Wound. No Water and Black Twin were mentioned as leaders of the Tasnaheca originally, then of the Hokayuta; perhaps they are related to the Bad Wound family as well.

I still think on balance that the Tashnahecha date back into the end of the 18th century. What we may be seeing reflected in Colhoff's statement is the re-emergence of the Tashnahecha as a viable autonomous band, and yes it does seem to fit the chronology of Bad Wound II leaving the Hunkpatila and joining the Southern Oglala in 1845. That hadn't occurred to me before.
Looking again at Colhoff, I was struck by the implication that Tashnahecha was an offshoot from the Kuhinyan band (the Tashnahecha "came into being afterwards [i.e. after the Kuhinyan] may be so, around the 1840's and 50's.)"
That echoes exactly what Left Heron told Mekeel in 1931: “The Kunhinyan later became the Gopher band (Tacnaitca)” (Field Notes, p. 46). Given what Charles Turning Hawk, son of Bad Wound II, told Mekeel (FN, p. 40), “The Tacnaitca is the biggest band and was called Oglala before that", I detect an early extensive intermarriage between Oglala Proper and Kuhinyan families, creating a new band, the Tashnahecha.
He Dog told Mekeel (a statement not in the Field Notes, but in a letter from Mekeel to George Hyde) that Smoke was originally of the Tashnahecha, later a Bad Face. I had assumed that Tashnahecha was his natal band, indicating it was existing by say 1800 (Smoke's age is dead reckoning I'm afraid, he was "Old" Smoke by 1846, though only a "brav" (David Adams) in 1841.) Smoke's father Parts of Body (called "Ree cha" by He Dog to Mekeel) was a Sihasapa (Wallace Amiotte statement to KMB), so it looks as if his mother was Oglala - Tashnahecha? Note W. Smoke's statement about Smoke's grandfather being Standing Bull - his maternal grandfather maybe? That should be Standing Bull I, the fellow who visited the Black Hills in ca. 1776. His family were correlated with the Hunkpatila by Left Heron.
I have a working chronology of the various Southern Oglala sub-bands - Kiyuksa, Tasnahecha, Kuhinyan, etc. and how they split off, amalgamated etc. A work in progress. Key to this is Left Heron's statement that the Kuhinyan band itself crystalised out of marriages between Cheyenne (men?) and Lakota (women?) following the sealing of a 'national' peace ca. 1782. I then see Tashnahecha budding off as per above ca. 1790.
By the way the Black Rock family was definitely related to the No Waters (remember He Dog to Hinman, July 13, 1930: "my father [Black Rock, 'brother' to Bad Wound II] and No Water's father [No Water I] were related"), so there must be some Bad Wound connection there too.

Gary, Dietmar is on holiday and is not checking in as often as usual. I was able to access some of the old web pages of the Bad Wound Family website: Bad Wound Family History
The Bad Wound history goes back to early 1800’s when Dakota Territory still existed, years before the Wounded Knee Massacre and reservation day’s. The name Bad Wound or Owe Sice came about when a young warrior went to battle and was wounded. Upon his return he was given the name, Owe Sice.
Owe Sice and his band was part of the Crazy Horse surrender in the late 1800's. Their surrender is mentioned in the Crazy Horse surrender journal. During the surrender is when the Lakota's were given first names and the name, Owe Sice, became the family last name. The family members were asked by the Calvary to walk up to the black board and pick their first names.
A few family members have been conducting research for the Bad Wound lineage. To date we have only confirmed 4 elders of which all the Bad Wounds descend from. Robert Bad Wound, Millie Bad Wound, Dan Black Horn (Bad Wound) and Noah Bad Wound. We are certain that Robert, Nellie and Dan are sibling, but have not confirmed whether Noah is their sibling or cousin.
Robert Bad Wound was the first elected Tribal President for the Oglala Sioux Tribe in 1934 as part of the Reorganization Act. When the agency was being set up, the government appointed Red Cloud as the chief, but the people voted and elected Bad Wound as their first Tribal President. Robert Bad Wound served as the tribal president until 1936. Since then many Bad Wound family members have held political positions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
