John Alden Clark (John Red Cloud) Born on the Rosebud Reservation 9/22/1894 According to Census reports: 1910 Shows Race: Red (Native American) He was 4years old. Father Jack Red Cloud Mother Nancy Red Cloud
At the age of 15 Allen W Clark and His Wife Ruth C Walker picked him up and took him to Minnesota. Census report 1910 shows Race: White This verifies stories my Grandfather has told me. He was on the Reservation until He was 15 with his mother.
U.S. Indian Census Schedules, 1885-1940 for Nancy Red Cloud, John Red Cloud, is no longer listed. That confirms that he is no longer listed as Native American. Back then they did not have regular adoptions, they just changed there names.
All of the Pow Wow’s we went to he was John Red Cloud. He was a quite, gentle man. The only thing he really wanted was to be Lakota, that wasn’t allowed by the Family or School. He was beaten, told to only speak the white mans tongue.
Grandpa married: Mina Ruth Abbott, June 30 1915, They have 8 children.
Death July 4th 1976
,
Lieutenant William Clark Officer at Camp Robinson Events of 1876-1877 Ref. Red Cloud Warrior-Statesman of the Lakota Sioux Robert W. Larson
And My Grandfather, John Alden Clark, aka John Red Cloud
Grandfather stories, one of them was of his Father Lt William Clark: He was assigned to deal with Crazy Horse who would surrender to Red Cloud at the Red Cloud Agency. To show respect one of Crazy Horses best warriors gave Lt. Clark a prized war bonnet. This story is written in book above. It is of the Washington peace trip, Young-Man-Afraid’s, Crazy Horse and several others.
Two accounts of Crazy Horses death, one from Lt. Clark, was on good terms longer than any other officer, reported as a terrible accident.
It was hard for Grandpa, as he had 2 families, Red Cloud and the Clarks, so his stories are from both sides, His white Father, Lt. Clark and, His Mother Nancy Red Cloud. He doesn’t have many from Jack Red Cloud, but what he knew from Chief Red Cloud his Grandfather. There are several pictures of a young boy, they say he is unknown, sometimes I wonder if he isn’t my Grandfather John Red Cloud.
Grandpa’s sister:
Dora B Clark aka Leader Red Cloud. Born: ,May 1891 Pine Ridge SD Parents: Jack and Nancy Red Cloud
Also Adopted by (Taken)
The Clarks
Married Ernest Biggs, 15 March 1919, Fort Thompson Buffalo SD Census report shows both Indian.
Had one Child with Homer Clark Hermania Clark: 1911 , Crow Creek SD, Tribe: Lower Yanktonia Sioux
Death 3 March 1949, Brule County DS Census SD Death 1905-1955

Yes my friend it is good to be able to look for family.
The Computer has given most of us a new life. Between here, Ancestry. I am finding more books written I can read. Maybe some of the good people can also help me. This is a wonderful place with so much information.

Hello, I am a new member of this site. I am looking for John Clark who married Adelia Soudriette/Sandrutte. I believe his middle initial was H. but I am not sure. I have a birth date of 1896. I am his gg granddaughter and I've been searching for him for years. My name is Touches the Water and I'm looking for my Indian family. John's daughter Fannie/Frances Clark (born in Minnesota) listed her race on her marriage certificate to William Meeder as INDIAN. That is the only clue to my past that I have. I want to go "home". I want a face, a tribe, I want to find my grandfather. Please if anyone at all can help I would be grateful. always, Touches the Water

Your best bet is probably to join Ancestry.com and try tracing your family there. I did a quick look-see and the closest I could find was the following. Father's name is listed as Ray (not John) but it's possible that this could be your Fannie, as Frances Clarke's middle name is Adelaide (similar to Adelia Soudriette). This Frances Clarke shows up on several of the Indian Census Rolls listed as a Chippewa. Hope this helps.
U.S., Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940 about Frances A Clarke Name: Frances Adelaide Clarke Date of Birth: 1919 Age: 8 Gender: Female Relation to Head of Household: Daughter Father's Name: Ray Clarke Tribe: Fond du Lac Chippewa (Chippewa) Reservation: Fond Du Lac Agency: Con Chippewa Ind State: Minnesota Last Census Number: 206 Previous Census Number: 205 Census Date: 30 Jun 1927

Hello!! I am new to this site and it has been very imformative and interesting. I am 41 yrs old and live in southwest Missouri. My maiden name is Cloud and I have been told since I was a child that I was a descedent of Chief Red Cloud. My father had a lot of obvious Indian in him, he almost looked full blooded. My grandfather was Loren Edgar Cloud and died approx. 1987. I am wanting to get my Indian card for myself and my children. This has not been easy. Does anyone have any information out there on my family, by chance, and how to go about getting these cards?? Any help or info is greatly appreciated!! Thank you! NCloud

The Red Cloud family is well documented, and the only way is to notify the Pine Ridge Reservation and go by their rules for enrollment, the Lakota/Dakota tribes as far as i know do not have descendancy law which mean you have to have a parent or grandparent enrolled into the tribe to be enrolled

My search has brought me here. I recently met my father for the first time. He knew I was coming into the world, but my mom put me up for adoption as soon as I stepped into it, so he didn't get to meet me until I was 43. I always had suspicion I had Native American blood, but could never confirm. My grandmother has given me some family history, and the Red Cloud name is at the beginning of the list. My grandmother writes: "I have been told by a family member that my Gr. Gr. Grandfather was a very good friend of the Sioux Indians, tribe unknown. His wife was a Sioux Indian. Wen a a son was born, the tribe did not want the child to go by the fathers name. They named him John Red Cloud. John Red Cloud later married Fannie Peters, they had 4 children...Nona RedCloud, born 1892-1973. Mae...Orville...Raymond. Nona married Fred Williams, having 2 children...Bertha 4/8/1912-1997 and Alice Williams, born in 1915." So Bertha is my great great grandmother.
Could this be of the same Red Cloud line that I am finding here? Does any of what my grandmother write fit in anywhere?

Hi. I am new to this forum and have found it to be very interesting. My maternal grandfather was at least 1/2 Choctaw and sadly I have not been able to verify if he was more or what other tribe he may have been. The reason I am posting here on the Red Cloud Family thread is that a friend found a plaque 30+ years ago at an abandoned 1800s farm house in Eastern Montana. He just recently asked me if I knew what it was. I believe that it is a Commemorative Peace Treaty Plaque that was designed to be placed on a memorial. The plaque is about 5 inches long , 3 inches wide, weighs about 2 pounds and made of brass. I also believe that it is Red Cloud`s image that is on the plaque. I am including a picture of the plaque in hopes that anyone in the Red Cloud family might be able to identify it. Thank you for your time and help.

Only my opinion, but that looks like a typical generic representation of an "Indian chief" to me, quite common in the early 1900s. Really could be anyone (or rather no one for that matter). Don't want to be a killjoy, but if there is no text on it I don't think you can link this to any particular person.
