Hello, I have to tell you that I think this website is very informative to alot of us searching for answers on our Indian ancestors. My question is about the White Eyes family of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, who were originally Cheyenne. The old man White Eyes, was born around 1838 and died in 1945, he was married by Indian Custom to a Mary Yellow Wood, aka Yellow Leaf, they had several children, Jacob White Eyes, born 1870 and died 1950. Ida White Eyes, Susie Jessie White Eyes, my husbands GGrandmother, Daniel White Eyes, and a Esther White Eyes. He married again later in life an had another son named Clarence White Eyes. Jacob traveled with Buffalo Bills Wild West show in the UK in 1906, that's where I found a picture of him, he made some friends in France and kept a correspondence with them for many years. Can any one tell me more about this family? Some where we've told that there is a connection to Chief Dull Knife in this family also. Attachments:

The 1890 Pine Ridge census lists the family of White Eyes as belonging to the Iwayusota band of Oglalas, Medicine Root District. Iwayusota (translated as Used Up by the Mouth, or Used Up by Begging) was a sub-group of the Kiyaksa (or Kiyuksa), i.e. the Southern Oglalas whose hunting grounds had traditionally been south of the Platte River in sw. Nebraska and neighboring sections of Kansas and Colorado.
Anyway, here is the family as listed in the 1890 census. White Eyes, Father, age 65 (born ca. 1825) Assiniboine, wife of White Eyes, age 65 Jacob, son, age 21, born 1869 Pretends to run, grandson, age 12 Small Fish, grandson, age 10 Turns Around, grandson, age 7.
The 1892 Pine Ridge census lists the family as follows: White Eyes, age 67 Old Woman, wife, age 63 Sword Red Fish, grandson, age 13 Frank Little Thunder, grandson, age 14.
Jacob is not listed. I presume Sword Red Fish (Lakota name given as Hohan Luta) is equivalent to Small Fish of 1890, and that Frank Little Thunder is Pretends to run of 1890.
I don't know about the Cheyenne connection, but White Eyes the elder is said to have been a son of Little Thunder, the Brule chief. In 1868 he was photographed by Alexander Gardner at Ft Laramie as part of a group including Spotted Tail. That same year he was part of the group that went from the Upper Platte Agency, then located at North Platte, Nebraska, to the the new Whetstone Agency on the Missouri. Interestingly he was then listed as an Oglala leader. In 1872 White Eyes went to Washington as part of the Brule delegation led by Spotted Tail. Again, Gardner made portraits of the delegation including White Eyes. Maybe Dietmar could post these pictures up.
I am interested in all these families, and I was interested to read your mention of Millicent, daughter of Fast Whirlwind, being married to Elbridge Gerry. Is she the same woman sometimes called Millicent Red Kettle? And if so, do we know what the relationship was between Fast Whirlwind and the Red Kettle family? Fast Whirlwind was the chief met by Francis Parkman in 1846 and called simply The Whirlwind. He was the leading chief of the Southern Oglalas in the 1840s, after the death of Bull Bear.
I hope this helps, and looking forward to your updates Kingsley Bray

I just noticed that the family preceding White Eyes in the 1890 census is of a woman named simply Yellow (Zi), age 42 (born ca. 1848). She has two sons living with her, Kills Alone (age 9) and One Horse (age 7). I wonder if she is Mary Yellow Wood or Yellow Leaf. I know that Ephriam is on the road this week (in fact at Pine Ridge), but maybe he can run his census concordance program for us on that one?

Hello, here´s the said portrait of White Eyes, when he was photographed by Gadner in 1872: "I-Shta-Ska or Ish-Tah-Skah (White Eyes) in Partial Native Dress and Holding Fan, Bag and Pipe 1872" (SIRIS) "I-Shta-Ska or Ish-Tah-Skah (White Eyes) in Partial Native Dress and Holding Fan, Bag and Pipe 1872" (SIRIS) I also found at the Smithonian´s SIRIS a portrait of Jacob White Eyes at Carlisle Indian School: "Portrait of William Brown, Phillip White and Jacob White Eyes, Students, in School Uniform 1887" ...and another portrait of Jacob White Eyes taken in Paris in 1905: The New York Times wrote about Jacob White Eyes on February 8, 1906, when he was with Cody in Europe: “Jacob White Eyes, Buffalo Bill´s chief interpreter, who married a French girl and is able to scamble on all fours through the French language.”

Kingsleybray and Dietmar, Thank you so much for your quick research! And the pictures are a great surprise to see! In my husbands family here on the Pine Ridge Reservation The White Eyes family, Old Man White Eyes, was said to be Cheyenne, and we too traveled to Fort Laramie in 2008 and saw the pictures of White Eyes with the Brule connection attached to it. In some the old Indian census the family is listed as being Cheyenne and Oglala. Old White Eyes, given the name Jacob, was also an Indian Scout for 6 months, in 1897. you can find his name listed at Ancestry.com when you put in a search, and see the document. He resided on the Pine Ridge Indian Res for the remaining years of his life where he had a land allottment and is buried in St Anne's Cemetery, near Wolf Creek,South Dakota, about 6 miles east of Pine Ridge. I have to say though the pictures of Jacob Jr. and White Eyes, there does look to be a simularity between them, in their eyes! Could this really be same Old man White Eyes? You've given us more to contimplate[img src="[/img] "] Attachments:

Kingsley Bray, Millicent and Millicent Red Kettle are the same person. There is alot of confusion here on who was the mother of who. Elbridge Gerry known as Elbridge Gerry of Weld County, Colorado, married serveral Indian Woman, It was always rumored he married two sets of Twins though not at the same time, the first pair being daughters of Red Kettle, they both had children from Elbridge. After them it is said the Chief Swift Bird gave Elbridge two more daughters, but I think they were either could have been his Neices , Millicent and Minivera, according to records at Pine Ridge Agency, which I have, states Millicent daughter of Fast Whirlwind b.1810 and d. 1870 and Walks Too, died in 1883. Millicent was born 1852 and died in 1909,buried in LaCreek, near Martin,South Dakota. She had three children from Elbridge Lucy/Luta, Charles, and Irene, before leaving him, or being given (Traded too) John Dubray, who fell in love with her while working for Elbridge at his ranch. Dubray took his new family back up to Fort Laramie and then over to LaCreek South Dakota where they settled down on an allottment, and had 4 more children. I'll write more later when I have more time. Deb

Fascinating, thanks for this. I'll pull together some more information. Elbridge Gerry's marriages tie in with the Cheyenne threads too, because according to Hyde's LIFE OF GEORGE BENT, Gerry's Lakota wife was the niece of Long Chin (ca. 1800-1887), a famous chief of the Cheyenne Dog Soldier society. Long Chin's younger half-brother was Tall Bull (born 1828), the Dog Soldier chief killed in the battle of Summit Springs, 1869. It's fascinating to think they may be connected to Fast Whirlwind in some way. Swift Bird was the father-in-law of one of the Janises, Nick or Antoine, I'll check these things and write again. Bearing on a different thread, Thomas Twiss was a fascinating individual indeed. I have his official correspondence on microfilm. It's always been my belief that there must be a trunk somewhere, perhaps on Pine Ridge, perhaps in upstate New York where his family came from (still a lot of Twisses in upstate NY phone books!) crammed with his private papers. They would tell an incredible story about his life with the Lakotas.
