And the hair is different because he'd had it cropped in the late 1880s and was growing it long again We figured he cut his hair as a sign of mourning while in England ..... some of his friends with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show had died - and he had led the funeral rites ! Annie

Thank you Henri ! I hadn't seen the one on the right either .... looks like it was taken within minutes of the one on the left ! On some of his photos Redshirt wears a ring on his left pinky finger ...... in most of his photos that hand is covered and in the photo with Plenty Horses - it's covered by his hat ! Annie

Annie.
today, re-reading White Man Stands in Sight (J. Colhoff) 's wintercount, I noticed that the 1889 entry is "Chief Red Shirt's sister killed herself". I'm not 100% this is the Red Shirt we've been talking about, but there's a strong possibility, as the commentary goes on saying that the girl was living in a Loafer camp. The wintercount also gives us the name of this girl's father: Little Crow. I've no information on Red Shirt's parents, even if I remember reading in one of the LBH threads that he was the offspring of a mixed marriage. Of course, another explaination could be that this sister was in fact a cousin.

Jinlian - I've seen the B.B.W.W. cast photo previously but not one that still has the gray scale range of the one you have posted. I obtained a copy of this photo from B.B.H.C. but it also has very little gray scale range. I would like to obtain a high res copy of your photo. My Great Uncle Jim 'Kid' Willoughby and his wife Lillian Francis Smith are present as cast members in this photo. I'll give you a high res copy of a 1911 101 Wild West Ranch Show cast show photo in return, it's 52" in length.
By the way in the last photo you posted RedShirt he's wearing the 1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal, it was made of silver and only 300 were made . . .

Jinlian - thanks but that's where I got my copy but they increased the contrast on my print and compressed the gray scale. I'll still send you the 101 Ranch photo if you'd like it. The 101 had a large Indian cast but I have identified any of Indians yet. I sent a copy to the 101 Ranch Association, this photo was not in their archives and they had not previously seen it, so it's kind of rare. It was my Great Uncles copy . . .

Annie - from the McCracken Collection you'll find 2 1887 group photos, call #P.69.812 & P.69.825. On the far right 1st row of both photo you'll find Red Shirt, they're both very good photo captures . . .
