Satanta`s children

In Anardako, Oklahoma , is located a statue of Satanta ( ( Set-t’ainte ) . The statue was made by
sculptor Sherman Chaddlesone. On the plaque are listed the children of Satanta as follows :

Tsa-l-au-te (Gray Goose)
Odle-paw (Buffalo Bird)
Auchiah (Looks-in-a-Ute-Lodge)
Ay-Keen (Dash-at-the-Enemy)
Sah-tope-ay-doh (Pipe Holder)
Ah-toh-nah (Charging the Enemy)
Sah-geh-ah-hodle (Skirmish on the East Side)
Pai-ah-tay (Same Land Mark)

Just an update--I have asked the Ok Historical Society to clarify the photo of "Big Bear", I have
not heard from them as of today. I made it to Lawton, Ok.. Now the fun part, the A/C is out at the library, I tried for two days to "take it like a man" no way. I did find a manuscript called
50 Years with the Kiowa, Corwin, presented by OK. NASDAR. In this it states Tsaulaute's mother was Yah-Dain-Dhate. Oh My! Never heard this name. It also says Tsalute's wife was an invalid and a cripple and he died at an early age, would have been around 44 I think. It also states his daughter married "SANKA-DOTEY", which is true. I made it to Ft Sill to the museum, wonderful experience, I now have a letter that states Tsalute was never in Troop L.
Which makes since, it was commissioned in 1892, he died in 1894, maybe to old at that time.
I did get the book cinemo referred me to "Bad Medicine & Good" still working on that. Also, ran across the name Thomas Kavanagh a lot----will update with more as it comes, I really appreciate everyone's help and sharing of information. suebaby

Glad you found the Lawton Public Library, although I hope the AC gets fixed before I get there in a couple of weeks..

If things are as I remember them from a couple of years ago, if you go into the Genealogy room, turn to your right, and go down the second aisle in from the windows, almost to the back. On the left hand side, sorta down near the bottom, you will find a thick red-bound book, titled on the spine, “Indian Genealogies – Kiowa Agency, OT., 1902.” That is the FRB. On that same tier of the bookshelf, on the bottom shelf, should be a photocopy of the original document from the Kiowa Agency. It is big, ledger size.

You may also find a document I produced back in the early 1990s. I can’t remember what I titled it, but it is a compendium of the Kiowa censuses: if you start with an entry in one column of names, say1879, the number to the left of the name is that list, while the number to the right is that person’s number in the next column, the 1883 list, and so on across the list. I sorta wish I had a way to reverse the process: if you had a person’s allotment number (the last column to the right), you could work back and find where they (or their parent) were on earlier lists.

Oh, yes:

Hugh Corwin was, for many years, a newspaperman for the Lawton Constitution. I don't know what his other duties may have been, but he did write columns on the local Indians, mostly Kiowas, with only a few references to Comanches ;-( , and the others. Most of his data came from interviews with the locals so it is a good source on what the state of local knowledge was at the time -- whether it would pass muster today is another matter. (Such original notes of his as there are are up in Chickasha at the college there; I didn't find much useful.)

suggestions, and yes I hope the a/c is repaired. Just a note, you are correct in the arrangement of the FHR, it has not changed and all the Indian books are in this area.
Mr Spivey has retired, I was sorry to hear and the person I visited with was Mark Magee. He
is very knowlegable and was very nice. You may know him, he has been at Ft Sill I think he
said for 20 years. He gave me a list of other museums and lots of places to research. I don't
know if I will ever make them all. He stays in touch with Mr Spivey. Hope you make all your

Hello to all at American-Tribes:

This is suebaby out of Bastrop Tex. I have not been on this site for quite a long time.
Just wanted to update my search for Satanta's Son. My previous post state I was looking
for a connection between Graygoose and Andy Lewis. Current information has clarified a
few things. Andy Lewis was arrested for horse theft in 1881 in Medina County Tex. He
was sentenced to five years in prison. No doubt this is our Andy Lewis. As the story
went he just disappeared when Catherine Tomerlin was expecting Lula (second daughter).
The Family had no information on what happened to him. Written records are catching up
with oral history. Can't imagine Kiowa Tribe not knowing this.
