A bit late in the day, but did you get a copy of 'Cheyennes in Court'? If not, I can help.

I agree with the terminology comments.
Also, the Henley story isn't correct. What actually happened is that following the Sappa Creek/Cheyenne Hole fight, Henley was in possession of the warbonnet belonging to Stone Forehead, the Cheyenne Arrow Keeper. This was seen at Fort Lyon, by Amache Prowers, the Cheyenne wife of a prominent rancher, John Prowers. The Prowers lived at nearby Boggsville. Amache assumed that Stone Forehead had been killed, and prophesied Henley's death. The warbonnet had however been loaned to a warrior who had been killed in the fight. Stone Forehead was still alive, although he died later that year, or early 1876. Henley was however drowned, as mentioned. By far the best account of all of this is John Monnett's 'Massacre at Cheyenne Hole: Lieutenant Austin Henely and the Sappa Creek Controversy'.

This is a great site for finding hard to get journal articles (JSTOR = Journal Storage). Some you have to pay for, but many are free. You don't need an account to access it. www.jstor.org/

I read this a couple of weeks ago. It's perhaps not for the casual reader, but for those with an interest in this area it's a must.

I have mentioned this in another thread, but the definitive analysis of Black Elk's stay in Europe is contained in Tom Cunningham's 'Black Elk, Mexican Joe & Buffalo Bill - The Real Story', which is available from lulu.com. He corrects the version given in 'Black Elk Speaks', using original the texts (from 'The Sixth Grandfather'), plus contemporary newspaper accounts and archive material from the UK and France. This was originally published as an English Westerners' Society Brand Book, but the Lulu edition is updated and expanded.

I'm really posting this to jog people's memories on this topic.
I did however find a passing reference to Sampson, and a picture of him in the Arcadia book on Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

The English Westerners' Society is in the process of producing a revised edition of Allan Radbourne's monograph on the origins of Mickey Free, 'Salvador or Martinez? - The First Fork on the Trail of Mickey Free'. The first edition, originally published in 1972, is long out-of-print. This publication should be available towards the end of this year.
