Thank you Henri ! I hadn't seen the one on the right either .... looks like it was taken within minutes of the one on the left ! On some of his photos Redshirt wears a ring on his left pinky finger ...... in most of his photos that hand is covered and in the photo with Plenty Horses - it's covered by his hat ! Annie

And the hair is different because he'd had it cropped in the late 1880s and was growing it long again We figured he cut his hair as a sign of mourning while in England ..... some of his friends with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show had died - and he had led the funeral rites ! Annie

Sorry to go off topic Wakalapi ............ but just to answer ...... I'm not sure about Lakota but Bloody Knife was born in 1840 to an Hunkpapa Sioux father and a Ree mother..... he spent his first 16 years with his father but was frequently taunted beaten and abused for being a "half-breed." At age 16 he left the Sioux camp with his mother but returned in 1860 to visit his father ..... Bloody Knife was still despised by the Sioux and was almost killed during this visit Chief Gall a leader of the Hunkpapa and participant in the Battle of the Little Big Horn killed Bloody Knife's two brothers in 1862 ! And this is Dorman ..... www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16174686Annie

Well I found this .... more confusion I think ....... !! According to the 1877 Agreement with the Sioux nation Mato-wankantu, [High Bear,] his x mark. is listed under OGALLALLA SIOUX --- CHIEFS AND HEADMEN www.lakotaarchives.com/lak1877sigtxt.htmlbut then .... Standing Rock ‘UNCPAPA’ - 14 - 27 July 1885 - (Hunkpapa Band Chiefs) 1) Cetan Wakiyan Chief Thunder Hawk 2) Mato Cuwiyuksa Chief Broken Bear Rib 3) Wanbli Wakantuya Chief High Eagle 4) Mato Ite Chief Bear's Face 5) Akicita Hanska Chief Long Soldier 6) Mato Ocinsica Chief Cross Bear 7) Tejikjice Chief Belly Fat 8) Tatoka Iyanke Chief Running Antelope 9) Mato Wakantuya Chief High Bear In the 1885 Standing Rock Ration list Chief Bear Face Hunkpapa had 22 lodges and 95 people under his care. People under his care: Mato Knaskiyan (Crazy Bear); Mato Ciqana (Little Bear); Mato Sapa (Black Bear); Otonwela (Goose's Wife); Wahancankayapi (Used as a Shield); Sungmanitu Ciqa (Little Wolf); Rbayela Mani (Walking Quietly); Ayutapila (Looking At); Mato Akicita (Bear Soldier); Mato Wakantuya (High Bear); Wamunon (Stealing); Wakiyan Luta (Red Thunder); Wojuha (Sack); Mila Kicun (Use His Knife); Marpiya To (Blue Cloud); Hin to Gleska (Spotted Blue Fur); Kangi Pa (Crow's Head); Ite Omagaju (Rain In the Face); Tate win (Wind Woman); Mato Rlo Iyanke (Bear GrowlRunning); Ceknake win (Breech Cloth); WamniomniTowin (Blue Whirlwind); Doesn't help does it ?? ... Hi to you both jinlian and Gordie ! I don't believe that's Jack Red Cloud !! on the other photo ... he looks very different ! Red Shirt could have been there as a "supportive friend" not necessarily as a witness .... and as the snippet said " Plenty Horses and his Indian friends “marched over to the photograph parlors of Butterfield and Ralston" He looks about the right age too ... it's interesting .... I'll keep digging ! Thank you both for your interest ! Annie

My mistake .... I got the wrong picture ... sorry !! That photo has been mislabeled by the original photo printer and that name legend was added during one of the printing processes - in other photos taken of that same group the label covers a banner that read "N.Y. World" as in the newspaper. That man sitting on the box is Major Burke - he's seen in several other photos taken on the same day. It's this photo I wanted ..... and the guy sitting on the right with the blanket on his knee and the rifle in his hands !! farm4.static.flickr.com/3009/2672364469_b65027b81c_o.jpgAnnie

I would like to know if there is a photograph of Joseph Standing Buffalo ......... grandson of Chief Sitting Bull ?? ( if this post is in the wrong place please move ! ) THE FIRST WORLD WAR "For four short years our sons fought in European trenches beside their sons, our blood mingled with theirs, as for four hundred years in a different way our bloods had mixed. Four thousands of our Native brothers and now grandfathers saw the European homeland through the sights of rifles and the roar of cannon. Hundreds are buried in that soil, away from the lands of their birth. These Native warriors accounted well for themselves, and the Allied cause. ... They were courageous, intelligent and proud carriers of the shield." "World War I-1914-1918," AMMSA , 2, 35 (November 9, 1984), p. 9. What a shame he died so close to the end of the war ... 29th of September 1918 Here's his Attestation Papers and a picture of his headstone www.rootschat.com/links/03uc/ also here he is in the 1911 Census ...... www.rootschat.com/links/03ub/ There is also his listing in the Canadian Book of Remembrance It is a bit confusing as in one or two places he is listed under Buffalo, while in others he is listed as Standing Buffalo. www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/collections/books/bww1/ww1505.jpgHere's a bit more to add to Joseph Standing Buffalo The 12th Infantry Brigade War Diary says check Appendix 10 for October not September - data2.collectionscanada.ca/e/e043/e001069081.jpgIt starts here - move forward page by page by changing the final digits in the URL - data2.collectionscanada.ca/e/e043/e001069231.jpgHeavy casualties are reported for the 78th at the Cambrai-Douai Road - data2.collectionscanada.ca/e/e043/e001069235.jpg...... it helps to tell the story ...... reading Chapter VII of "Canada's Hundred Days" by Livesay Page 248 refers to the 78th distinguishing itself in coming up in support and beating off overwhelming forces ! it looks as if Joseph was one of many !! "Great Spirit, we ask of you to receive our warriors." 1onewolf.com/lakota/Lundstrom.htm
