Was Mitch Boyer 1/2 Oglala. That is was his mother Oglala? The reason I ask is that he was attacked by a tribe in 1865 and was wounded. I think one man died. Mitch got back safely but before the fight started, he talked with someone among the attackers that he played with as a boy. They joked, but it did not save him from the attack. I want to know if they (the attackers) were Oglala.

If the attackers were Oglalas I don't know. Regards Jari

I agree with Jari... I have always understood Mitch Bouyer to be half French and half Santee. He did speak his mother's language as well, so that may have saved them that day in 1865... my best, Jeroen

I just finished Marquis' bio of Tom LaForge, Memoirs of a White Crow Indian. It's a fantastic read. Tom and Mitch were very close. Tom married Mitch's wife, Magpie Outside, in the NDN tradition after Mitch was killed.
Tom confirms Mitch's mother was Santee. There are many tales of their adventures that provide a wonderful perspective of how these men lived in NDN society.

I agree, LaForge/Horse Rider's memoirs are indeed a must, also for the description of Crow society and customs in the pre-reservation era.
