There are many impressive shirts in the photo with the line of chiefs... I´ll look through my Nez Perce pictures if I can find a similar one, although I know the chances are low, and I´m sure Mr. Nakia Williamson knows best about the Nez Perce.

I know this one is supposed to be before the Nez Perce War but I need convincing. It has the look of so many other photos taken after their return to the northwest.

The there's this one: passed off as Nez Perce after the surrender, but it's young Mountain Chief and some Piegans, presumably in town for some kind of meeting, judging by their dress:

Joseph and his band at Lapwai, spring, 1877


If I'm honest, as I said in a post above, this reminds me of a number of Moorhouse photos taken after Joseph's return to the Northwest. However, in defence of this photo being dated 1877, I will say that if you look at those later images, they're of a period where warbonnets had become common and there are only two here.






The above three photos are by J. W. Hansard of Verona, Missouri, taken soon after the Nez Perce had been removed to Kansas. The white man at the right is the interpreter, Colonel A. I. Chapman

From the simple backdrop, this looks like an 'early' Nez perce photo. Tha white man was labelled Robert Boyd. Might it be Chapman again.

Nez Perce village on the Yellowstone, 1871 - W. H. Jackson.  This was a temporary camp of a small hunting party, who were visiting the Crow at the old agency, near the mouth of Shields River.

437 is the Chief of the village i.e. Looking Glass. Wonder which one 438 is...

About the image of WHITE BIRD and wife: I don't think he belonged to the famous chief PEOPEO KISKIOK HIHIH of the Lamtama band that fought the Nez Percè war.
He was born in 1807 and died in 1892 in Canada. In this photo of 1877 he seems forty years old. It's more likely his nepew.
In 1875 Old White Bird replaced the leadership of the other famous chief EAGLE FROM THE LIGHT (TIPIYELEHNE KA AWPO), another great enemy of the Whites, that went to live in Montana with the Shoshone band leaded by chief Eagle Eye.
Any info about HUNTS NO MORE brother of Looking Glass?

Thanks, Charlie. You're right. Mark Brown (in Flight of the Nez Perce) notes he was over 60 years of age in 1877. McWhorter talks about White Bird being incapacitated by age - though he slips away from Bear Paw to Canada so I may be tempted to take that one with a pinch of salt... It's odd that Greene has him in his mid-50s in 1877 (he has to be older, as you say) in Nez Perce Summer, yet uses the Anderton/Hook photo of that much younger man in Beyond Bear's Paw. A son perhaps? Or maybe the 'translation' of White Swan to White Bird was opportunistic and is an error that modern historians have just run with. Maybe he is just a man called White Swan. Either way, thanks for the correction, because it can't be him - so I wonder if that is Looking Glass' brother too. I'm not sure where that identification came from, other than Greene, but it looks like the text at the bottom of the photo has been cut off as it ends in a comma, so maybe he had seen a complete version of the image.

So... maybe that is Joseph, Looking Glass and White Bird in that group photo at Lapwai and it really is from 1877; I wonder if it was taken when General Howard was trying to impress them by showing them the farming and industry among the agency people there in May of that year..

In the web there are at least a couple of photos referred to Old White Bird (with headdress) but unfortunately are not certified. May be that he is present in the group photos of 1877 but the identification is too difficult...
