So Black Elk will be somewhere in that first photo?

Looking at Cody here (1887-8?), it's interesting to see how much he ages over the next few years when you consider those photos taken just after Wounded Knee.

I can´t find Black Elk... but Red Shirt is easy to discern in the first photo.

In the first photo there's several people I can ID. Find the Sergeant standing at the top of the group, then move right over to the pole and down 2 people, that cowboy is Jim Kid Willoughby, to his right is John Nelson (full white beard), in the 1st row standing near the middle with both hands in front of her on her rifle is Lillian Francis Smith the rival shooter for Annie Oakley and right 6 people is Annie Oakley. This 1887 tour was the only one that Smith and Oakley shot against each other . . .

Deitmar - Do you know when and where the 2nd B.B.W.W.S. photograph was taken. It appears to have been taken in a prison, the show personnel are surrounded by men all wearing the same type of convict looking clothing, sprinkled among these men are other men wearing dark uniforms such a guards uniforms.

This photo may not be of B.B.W.W.S. but rather that of the 101 Wild West Ranch Show which Cody appeared with after his show went bankrupt. This photo may have been taken around the same time as the one post under "Weird fellows with Bill..." by Frank. The photo date would then be around 1910 or later.

yes you´re right. I looked in the McCracken Collection at Buffalo Bill Historical Center and there the photo is entitled: William F. Cody and cast Buffalo Bill´s Wild West and prisoners at New York State Penitentiary in Auburn, New York. Photographer Emil Kraemer, July 30,1908.

Hi Wolfgang - After some checking I found that Gordon William Lillie ,Pawnee Bill, purchased a partner ownership of the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show with Cody in 1908 and they were bankrupt by 1913. The man standing at the very front. left side of this 'prison' photo wearing the gray fadora, looks like a very well known San Franciscan by the name of Isadore 'Izzy' Gomez, if it is 'Izzy' that would suggest this photo was taken at San Quentin Prison. The show was in San Francisco & Oakland area about this period. The previously noted photo posted by 'Frank' is taken in front of the Oakland Tribune Newspaper Building, Cody appears to be about the same age in each photo

wolfgang- I found the original photograph posted by 'Frank'. The image was made Oct. 1, 1910 made in front of the offices of the Oakland Tribune, depicts Buffalo Bill Cody, at reins, posed with members of the cast of his "Wild West & Rough Riders of the World", including marksman Johnny Baker, rough rider Thomas J. Isbell, roper Ora Pazzo, Young Spotted Owl, Crow Dog, et al. From the Joseph R. Knowland collection at the Oakland History Room, Oakland Public Library. Number in collection : 159. So these photos are 2 years apart in date. It can be viewed at:

I don't know how reliable this is, but I have the Joseph-Cody picture dated as 1898.

The 2 photos, 1890 Rome, Italy & 1890 Verona, Italy you have posted were taken at the same location and probably within minutes of each other. I'm not sure which label is correct but the Denver Library identifies your 1890 Rome also as Rome . . .

It is indeed Chief Joseph and the photograph was taken in April 1897, when Joseph, who had been on a trip to Washington, was introduced by general Miles to Buffalo Bill who invited him in the ceremonies for Grant's reburial in NY. Joseph and his nephew Alahkat (the man standing at his right) also took part in a performance at Cody's show.

In the top photo. The tall man way to the left is Grandpa Black Horn.
